Ducati was established in 1926 by Antonnio Ducati and his sons, initially producing electrical components. After WW2 they moved into motorcycles with the Cucciola, essentially a pushbike with a clip-on engine. By the 60s they had become associated with performance bikes selling a range of sporty 250 and 350 singles. In response to the demand for larger capacity bikes chief engineer Fabio Taglioni designed the classic V Twin bevel drive engine first used in the 1971 GT750. This proved to be an immediate success, helped considerably by Paul Smarts win in the 1972 Imola 200 race. This started a tradition of race-winning V twins that have gone on to dominate World Superbike racing over the years. After Tony Rutters win in the 1981 Formula 2 TT on a bike built by Sports Motorcycles out of a crashed Pantah, the Ducati factory realised there was a World Championship up for grabs. The only other round in the championship that year was the Ulster Grand Prix, and Franco Farne and one of the sales managers arrived in Ireland with two NCR built bikes based on the Pantah 600. After a tactical second place finish, Tony was crowned World Champion, going on to win four consecutive Formula Two World Championships from 1981 to 1984. Ducati itself produced about 50 replicas, and various specialists produced frame kits to allow riders to create their own versions.
This bike started life as a standard Cagiva Alluzura, but in the early 2000s, it was converted using what is thought to be one of only 10 TT2 Replica frames made by Saxon. Built by an engineer, he fitted 18″ Dymag wheels, Ceriani front forks and Brembo 4 *** front calipers. A special wiring harness was constructed allowing lights, that will be included in the sale, to be fitted for road use. Stored for a few years, it will need recommisioning before use and will be supplied with a current V5C.
