In 1902 Peugeot adopted front mounted engines for all new models, beginning with the single cylinder Type 48 and the brand’s first four cylinder car, the Type 39. The most popular Peugeot at the time was the Type 54 from the Audincourt facility. A 652cc 5 hp single cylinder car with 250 units produced in 1903. The facility also turned out a smaller number of other models, including 149 Type 57’s in 1903. This was redesigned during 1904 to give it a ‘big car in miniature’ appearance with a conventional radiator and bonnet, like the larger cars in the Peugeot range. Its engine was uprated to 6-hp. This model did away with the chain drive mechanism, with power now delivered to the rear wheels by a drive shaft. The “Voiturette” body offered armchair level seating for two.
