** 1929 Scott 500cc Flying Squirrel Deluxe**
Registration no. not registered (see text)
Frame no. 3070M
Engine no. LFZ4053
Although recognisably derived from the earliest designs, the Scott motorcycle of the 1920s gained steadily in both complexity and weight, a particularly significant development being the introduction of a three-speed countershaft gearbox for 1923. Like its major rivals, Scott was well aware of racing's publicity value and the allure of models with a TT connection, so the adoption of an optional full-frame tank, like that of the works racers, for the new Flying Squirrel was not surprising. Launched at the Olympia Show in 1925, the 'Flyer' came in 498cc and 596cc capacities, the latter the most expensive machine in the range. Subsequent models further benefited from racing, gaining the duplex frame and bigger brakes (first seen on the 1926 works bikes) and the magneto-platform Pilgrim oil pump adopted for the '27 TT machines.
Acquired by the vendor in 1988, this Vintage-era Flying Squirrel is an older restoration presented in generally complete condition, though now requiring detailed cleaning and recommissioning. The machine is offered with a letter dated 25th September 1988 from marque specialist John Underhill to the vendor, which provides detailed observations regarding the Scott's identity and specification.
Within this correspondence it is noted that the registration 'LG 6553' (which the machine currently bears) is recorded as belonging to frame number '98', a TT Replica, and therefore does not relate to the present machine.
The letter further identifies a number of component inconsistencies, including: Engine number 3070, noted as corresponding to a 1929 Flying Squirrel Engine number LFZ 4050, identified as a 1934 500cc long-stroke unit Front forks described as the later 1929–30 type Petrol tank identified as a 1928 narrow 'Flyer' type On this basis, the machine is described as a "built-up" example, assembled from components of differing periods.
The letter also records a number of previous keepers, including:
W Hodge, Eton Wick
P Dolsow, London NW3
K Robinson, Bradford
The correspondence continues with further comments on various inaccuracies observed on the machine. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/ or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
Key not required
All lots are sold ‘as is/ where is’ and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
