Description
Acquired directly from a local Surrey-based Italian car collector, this example has been in his ownership since 2009 and forms part of a wider private collection, kept in dry storage throughout. The car is fully HPI clear and presents with just 2 previous owners recorded. We are able to introduce the next owner directly to him as part of the sale, offering a level of provenance rarely available with cars of this type.
The Vignale Gamine is a coachbuilt interpretation of the Fiat 500, produced in limited numbers by Carrozzeria Vignale between 1967 and 1971. Designed as a lightweight, open-top leisure car, it utilises the Fiat 500 platform and mechanicals, but with completely bespoke bodywork and detailing. Surviving examples are scarce, particularly in restored condition with known ownership history.
This car was subject to a comprehensive restoration approximately seven to eight years ago during the current ownership, and remains in excellent condition throughout. Finished in its original Peppermint Green, the paintwork presents to a high standard, consistent with careful storage and limited use since restoration. The interior is particularly distinctive, featuring hand-made wicker seats in keeping with the Gamine’s original design brief, along with a full mohair weather gear set, allowing the car to be used in varying conditions while retaining its period character.
Mechanically, the car retains its original engine block, which has been upgraded sympathetically. It has been machined to accept 650cc barrels and is fitted with a corresponding 650 cylinder head, offering improved usability over the standard 500cc configuration. Further upgrades include electronic ignition for improved reliability, a front disc brake conversion for enhanced stopping performance, and a revised front frame incorporating coilovers, upgraded shock absorbers, and a steering rack, all of which contribute to a more composed and usable driving experience without detracting from its character.
The result is a well-resolved example that remains true to its origins, while benefitting from sensible improvements where it matters. These cars are defined as much by their design and rarity as their driving experience, and this particular example stands out for its ownership history, restoration quality, and mechanical setup.
As a historic vehicle, it is ULEZ compliant, and exempt from road tax and MOT requirements.
