Limited to 333 units worldwide (this car is No. 131) and only 33 for the UK. The type 42 Audi R8 GT was created to celebrate the on-track success of its LMS racing cousin which had taken a one-two at the Nurburgring 24-hour.
In 2012, Audi decided to take its "everyday supercar" and strip away the politeness. The result was the R8 GT Spyder, a limited-run, open-top swan song for the first-generation R8. With only 333 units it was designed for the driver who wanted the sky as their headliner and a Lamborghini-derived V12 soundtrack as their score.
To earn the "GT" badge, the R8 went to the gym and cut the carbs. Audi engineers managed to shave 85kg from the standard V10 Spyder, an impressive feat for a car already utilizing an aluminium space frame. The GT uses Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) for the front splitter, rear bumper, fixed rear wing, and those iconic side blades. Even the glass was thinned, and the carpets were lightened. It’s a car where every gram was treated as an enemy of performance. In addition the GT is lowered by 10mm and features manually adjustable coilover suspension, signaling that this Spyder was meant for the apex, not just the streets.
At the heart of the GT Spyder sits the 5. 2L FSI V10, tuned to produce 560 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. In an era where we are now surrounded by turbocharged efficiency and silent electric torque, the GT Spyder’s engine feels like a masterpiece from a more visceral age. Unlike the standard R8, which can sometimes feel almost too composed, the GT has a hint of playfulness. The Quattro system is rear-biased, allowing the car to rotate with a level of agility that belies its footprint.
Fourteen years after its debut, the 2012 R8 GT Spyder has reached "Hall of Fame" status.
