Description

There’s very few that have received such a well-respected level of maintenance like this ‘S Special’, focused entirely on preserving and elevating the MK1 MX-5's factory-intended character.

The S Special is one of the most desirable iterations of the renowned MK1 MX-5. Launched in Japan in 1992 exclusively as a 1. 6L — this engine found in the majority of surviving S-Special’s, with the 1. 8L only developed and introduced much later in the production run. Any buyer in the market for a MK1 MX-5 wants the more powerful 1. 8L — in S Special configuration, that pairing places this example as one of the most sought-after specifications the MK1 offers. Specification includes a Nardi Steering Wheel, 14” BBS Wheels, Bilstein Suspension, Limited Slip Differential, Strut Brace, S Special Floor Mats, Roadster Sill Plates and Teardrop Speaker Covers, Electric Windows and Electric Mirrors. The car has been carefully specified with an exceptionally rare full Mazdaspeed exhaust system, from manifold to cat-back — a complete factory performance set-up, conservatively valued at £1, 000.
This MK1 has one of the most respectable history file’s and expenditures you’ll find. These cars are well renowned for their corroding arches sills and general underside. The highest standard to rectify and prevent this is ‘The MX-5 Restorer’, with a £1, 950 invoice present for replacement inner and outer sills, as well as an underside strip down, underseal and cavity wax treatment.
Any S Special’s still running their original Bilstein suspension are now on 33-year-old shocks and springs, and most owners long ago abandoned originality in favour of aftermarket coilovers. This example took the harder and more expensive route: an £850 invoice is present for a full replacement of the factory-correct Bilstein setup, a step most shy away from due to the cost alone.
Finished in the ‘Brilliant Black’ colour-way, the paintwork benefits from a fresh 3 stage machine polish to enhance presentation to its best. Alongside a wheel refurbishment, the BBS’ were wrapped in a matching set of Dunlop Sports. Both the Cambelt and Water-pump were replaced at the most recent service on the 1st April 2026, as well as a refreshed MOT till 7th April 2027. The underside has been fully inspected and both Front Upper Arms have just been replaced.
