Description

The late ‘90s and early 2000s marked something of a high-water mark for BMW. Call it a golden age if you like - a time when the E39 5-Series, E38 7-Series and E31 8-Series redefined what fast, luxurious saloons and GTs could be.

But for all their brilliance, they were (whisper it) sensible. BMW knew it needed something less rational. Something indulgent. So in 1997, at the Tokyo Motor Show, they unveiled the Z07 concept: a modern interpretation of the 507. A car that nodded to Elvis-era glamour, but with a modern touch. What followed was the Z8.

This particular car was first delivered new in Rome in November 2000, spending its first 15 years on the continent before arriving in the UK in 2015. It’s finished in Jet Black - or Schwarz II, if you prefer - a proper non-metallic black that suits the car’s understated aggression perfectly. The paint presents beautifully.

Sitting beneath are the correct BMW Style 59 wheels, unique to the Z8. 18-inch, perfectly proportioned, and now wearing a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres. There’s no badging clutter here either, no model designation, no unnecessary logos, just clean surfaces and pretty curves, as it should be.

Importantly, it retains its original BMW hard top, a detail often overlooked, and often lost. Inside, things get delightfully retro. The design leans heavily into mid-century inspiration… think SMEG, but engineered by Germans. The body-coloured dash wraps into the doors, with a centrally mounted gauge cluster angled subtly towards the driver. It’s unusual, but it works.

Black and cream leather cover the cabin, stitched properly, as you’d expect. The steering wheel is a highlight - thin-rimmed, elegant, and refreshingly free of flat-bottomed gimmicks. Heated seats come as standard, trimmed in matching two-tone hide.

Then there’s the engine, under the bonnet sits the S62 4. 9-litre V8 - lifted straight from the E39 M5, one of BMW’s all-time greats. Around 400bhp, a 7, 000rpm redline, and an appetite for revs that never really gets old. It’s paired with a six-speed manual, because it’d be rude not to.

Despite covering just 30, 000km from new, this car hasn’t been left to sit. When it arrived in the UK, Joe Macari handled its conversion and preparation, including replacement of the Vanos accumulator.

In February 2022, Grosvenor Motor Company carried out a comprehensive recommissioning with bushes, hoses, clamps and finer details addressed, totalling just under £9, 000. In late 2023, the car received a new dual-mass flywheel, clutch, and rear shock absorbers, with a further £6, 000 invested.
More recently, in May 2025, the car was inspected and fettled by marque specialists Everything M. Work included investigation of running behaviour, diagnostic checks, Vanos testing, and fuel system assessment, alongside replacement of ignition coil packs and spark plugs, fresh gearbox oil, and ancillary items to ensure that the car performs as it should.
So yes, it’s been looked after, and it’s been done properly.

The Z8 has always sat in its own lane. Not quite an M car, despite its engine. Not quite anything else either. It shares space with the oddballs and icons: the M1, the 1M Coupe, the 850 CSi. Cars that don’t fit in a specific box and that are better for it.

If you’re after something nostalgic, slightly indulgent, and powered by one of BMW’s finest V8s, this is exactly that. And yes — it was in a Bond film. But somehow, that’s the least interesting thing about it.

As ever, we have a full digital file available on request, including additional images, walkaround videos, and service history scans. The car is available to view by appointment at our West London showroom.
