Description
Citroen 11b Traction Avant
In the history of motoring there is a model that stood out for a series of unprecedented solutions all gathered in a single car. We’re talking about the Citroen Traction Avant, the Double Chevron model born in the first half of the 1930s capable of bringing to the road technologies that changed the way we conceive the car.
At the end of the 1920s Andre Citroen, founder of the eponymous French marque, was seeking the right inspiration to replace the increasingly dated 8CV, 10CV and 15CV. The aim was to bring to the road something innovative, never seen before, capable of shaking up the market. For this reason, he hired a few individuals destined to become the key men in the project for the new car: ** Flaminio Bertoni,** an Italian sculptor charged with styling, and Andre Lefabre, responsible for developing the technical solutions.
** The team put together by Citroen didn’t reinvent anything, but did something that up to that moment no one had had the courage to do: take some of the most innovative technical solutions of the era and put them together into a single car.**
It was equipped with** front-wheel drive, monocoque chassis and steel coachwork. Unprecedented were also the engine mounts, for the first time in rubber, as well as the innovative suspension package, which at the front could rely on an independent wheel layout and hydraulic brakes**. All of this translated into greater ** torsional rigidity** of the car, making it more precise and safe in corners, while** the novel suspension layout and the rubber engine mounts made the car comfortable even on long journeys.** Thanks to all these innovations it was nicknamed "the car with 100 patents" and regarded as the first "modern" car in history, as well as the first European car with front-wheel drive. Not only that: low, light and *** exceptional road behaviour for its era, it held many endurance and distance records, even managing to cover 400, 000 km in succession in a test set by a magazine of the time!
This specimen, born in June 1949, is an 11b, i. e., the most successful version of the Traction Avant. "11" stood for fiscal horsepower under French rules, but the most important thing is that ** under the bonnet sits the robust and long‑lived 1911cc unit producing 56hp**. The gearbox is a three‑speed manual, while the bodywork, compared with the previous "7", has been lengthened and widened.
** The car received a complete mechanical restoration in 2010 and since then has covered only 10, 000 km, always as a ceremonial vehicle or for film purposes. The bodywork was fully repainted in the same year and remains in excellent condition, as do the interiors.**
** Completely original, to improve usability electronic ignition was added.**
