- 1985 – Porsche 911 Turbo ‘RUF BTR conversion’ Chassis no. WPOZZZ93ZGS000183 French registration document French registration certificate “An exceptional RUF BTR conversion, recently fully restored” “An exceptional RUF BTR conversion, recently fully restored” The story begins in the early 1960s, near Pfaffenhausen, Germany. At the wheel of the bus he had built in 1955, Alois Ruf was taking his son for a drive. A Porsche 356 overtook them and crashed into the scenery: the car was badly damaged, and the driver was taken to hospital by our two protagonists. After buying the wreck, Ruf father and son set to work and rebuilt it piece by piece: this was Alois Ruf Jr.’s first encounter with Porsche. Inspired by the young man’s boundless passion (he was 13 at the time of the 356 incident), the family business, Auto-RUF, began specialising in repairing crashed Porsches in the region. Alois Ruf Sr. passed away in 1974, leaving his 24-year-old son to take over the family business. Building on his already considerable experience, Alois Jr. began offering performance upgrades in 1977, initially on the 911 Turbo, then across most of the range. Very quickly, the success and quality of these enhancements enabled him to achieve the ultimate goal of any tuner: the German government granting him the status of a car manufacturer. Born of a father-son passion, RUF’s creations are now among the most sought-after cars on the market, notably setting a new auction record in early 2025 for a Yellowbird at over $6, 000, 000! Our example was originally sold new in Germany as a 930 Turbo 3. 3 with a 4-speed gearbox, in Guards Red. Its options sheet, still present under the bonnet, also indicates the code Z, reserved for cars adapted for special series or production… The service history book has been lost, but a duplicate was provided by the Porsche Classic Bordeaux centre, which lists further options, notably the rare and sought-after limited-slip differential. Our 930 Turbo was subsequently converted into a RUF BTR: its engine bears the number BTR 34062, the gearbox is now a 5-speed, the brakes are RUF-branded, the car has been lowered, and all the cosmetic features are present (RUF Speedline wheels, specific wing mirrors, RUF steering wheel…). It joined the collection of the current owner, a keen collector of the German marque, in 2015. Just before its purchase, a full restoration was carried out: overhaul of the engine and gearbox, a complete repaint, and an upgrade of the running gear, costing over €38, 000 (invoice available in the file). Since purchasing it, this collector has driven only a handful of kilometres, whilst ensuring his RUF was regularly serviced. Now in excellent condition, this RUF will undergo some minor work prior to sale to ensure it is fully roadworthy. A true legend, extremely rare both on the roads and on the market, Porsches that have undergone RUF tuning are potential collector’s items, reserved for a select audience of connoisseurs…
