Vehicle history:
At the start of the new millennium, as the successes of the 911 RSR generation 993 were still fresh in many minds, Porsche withdrew from factory competition. The successor to the RSR was not to be run by a works team, but by numerous private teams with Porsche support. This ushered in a completely new iteration of the 911 based on the GT3 model. The 1999-launched GT3 R of the 996 generation was the first water-cooled racing car. Its 3. 6-litre flat-six, model M96/ 77, produced around 405 hp and was fitted with a 41. 3 mm air restrictor to meet FIA category regulations. The GT3 R celebrated major successes with notable class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999 and 2000. It is believed that only 65 examples of the race car were built to the 2000 model year specifications, including the Porsche offered here. The car was new to Freisinger Motorsport in December 1999 and was leased by Arbre Competition for Le Mans. The drivers Bouchut-Gouselard-Chereau took the Porsche to pole in its class during qualifying. In the race, unfortunately they retired after an accident ahead of them. The car subsequently competed in the FIA GT class in 2000 and 2001 at numerous events. In 2002 the car took part in the Spa 24 Hours and finished 22nd. Since 2006 it has been in collector hands and has been used occasionally at Spa and Paul Ricard.
