1928 Morris L-Type – A Stunning Century-Old Survivor and Rare Find
At Andrew Hardy Classics, we have a real passion for rare commercial vehicles, and this 1928 Morris L-Type is a true standout. Nearly 100 years old, this wooden-bodied van represents the very beginning of British commercial motoring. It is a remarkable survivor that has been beautifully preserved, making it a "star" for any collector, museum, or business looking for the ultimate promotional tool.
History & Provenance
This Morris has spent much of its recent life preserved in a private museum. It was previously part of a significant collection owned by a well-known commercial enthusiast before arriving at our Durham base. It was reportedly reconditioned when it first entered museum storage and has been kept in fantastic structural condition ever since. Since arriving with us, it has been recommissioned and is now starting and driving beautifully.
Bodywork & Exterior Condition
The van features a traditional wooden body, a common sight in the late 1920s but a rarity to find in such excellent, rot-free condition today.
Stunning Finish: The paintwork is in lovely condition with a deep shine. It possesses a "true patina," with only minor micro-blistering and a few honest chips that do nothing to detract from its massive road presence.
Branding Potential: It currently features vintage-style signwriting, but the side panels provide a "blank canvas" for a new owner to add their own business livery. It is the perfect advertising tool—simply apply your own vinyls and you have a mobile billboard that turns heads everywhere it goes.
Solid Foundation: The C-section chassis is exceptionally clean and has been well-painted underneath. There are no "nasties" or rust issues hiding here; it is as solid as they come.
Weather Gear: It is fitted with a canvas/ vinyl roof in good order and features the iconic opening top windscreen for "period air conditioning."
Mechanical Highlights
Under the bonnet sits a reliable 4-cylinder petrol engine—a low-compression version of the famous Morris Cowley unit, meaning parts and maintenance remain straightforward for the enthusiast.
Starting: This is an authentic "hand-crank" start vehicle. It hasn’t been fitted with a modern electric starter, but it starts remarkably easily on the first or second flick of the handle.
Performance: The engine is smoke-free and knock-free, showing fantastic oil pressure even when warm. It pulls well for a vehicle of its era, with a comfortable cruising speed of around 30 mph.
Recent Work: We have carried out light recommissioning to ensure it is road-ready. It retains its Magneto ignition system and small SU carburetor, staying true to its original 1920s specification.
Interior & Cab
The cab is a time capsule of 1920s commercial life. We have made a slight adjustment to the seat to improve the driving position, making the pedals much easier to reach than standard. The interior features the traditional center-throttle layout common to the period. The rear cargo area is a masterpiece of timber work, showing the incredible craftsmanship involved in its original construction or restoration.
Summary
The Morris L-Type is a rare beast and a quality alternative to more common pre-war commercials. Where else would you find a century-old van that you can actually drive and enjoy today? Whether you are looking for a unique promotional vehicle, a museum centerpiece, or a vintage tourer for the steam show field, this Morris is a rare opportunity to own a piece of motoring history.
