Lot 56
Single owner for over 60 years
1923 Raleigh 2¾hp
Registration no. AF 8069
Frame no. 10411 (see text)
Engine no. Unable to Locate (see text)
Britain's best-known bicycle manufacturer, Raleigh, also produced motorcycles from 1899 to 1905 and again from 1919 to 1933. In later years, the Nottingham firm returned briefly to powered two-wheelers, offering a range of mopeds and a scooter during the late 1950s and 1960s.
During the 1920s, Raleigh's motorcycle range expanded considerably, encompassing machines of various capacities, employing both side-valve and overhead-valve engines, and ranging from a lightweight 175cc unit-construction model to a substantial 998cc V-twin. Among the marque's most enduring offerings was the 350cc, 2¾hp model—a compact, side-valve lightweight which, while not especially fast at full throttle, offered brisk acceleration and commendable handling by the standards of the period.
This Vintage-era, all-chain Raleigh is presented in lovely cosmetic condition and is understood to have benefited from an older restoration. According to the vendor, it has been fitted with a 3hp engine, although we have been unable to locate an engine number and the frame number is overpainted. The accompanying HPI report also lists the engine number as "not stated" and records an incorrect capacity of 99, 999cc.
Offered with a duplicate old-style logbook, recording the current owner as keeper since 1964, together with an old-style V5C and V5.
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/ or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
£4, 000 - 6, 000
All lots are sold ‘as is/ where is’ and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
