Created by Mercedes-Benz in its pursuit of World Rally Championship (WRC) success during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the 500SLC stands as one of the marque’s ultimate homologation specials.
Based on the elegant C107 coupe platform, the 500SLC was equipped with a newly developed 5. 0-liter all-aluminum V8 engine producing 240 horsepower. The lightweight powerplant significantly reduced weight while delivering a substantial increase in performance. Although built to satisfy homologation requirements, production lasted only a short period, resulting in a total production run of just 1, 133 examples.
This particular example is especially notable for retaining its original “Mi 33” license registration (now classified as “Mie 33”), a highly desirable two-digit period plate that can no longer be newly issued in Japan.
The exterior has benefited from a comprehensive repaint in its original color, restoring the car’s fresh and elegant appearance. Further enhancing its presence are period AMG aerodynamic components and the iconic AMG “Starfish” alloy wheels. At the time, AMG enjoyed tremendous popularity among enthusiasts before eventually becoming Mercedes-Benz’s official high-performance partner.
Opening the substantial doors reveals an interior that contrasts beautifully with the car’s aggressive exterior styling. Elegant, remarkably original, and exceptionally well preserved, the cabin remains one of the car’s greatest highlights.
