Description

Produced from 1971 through 1989, the R107-generation SL remains one of the longest-running and most successful roadsters in Mercedes-Benz history. Representing the final stage of this celebrated lineage, the European-specification 500SL offered here stands as one of the most refined and fully matured expressions of the model.

Powered by a magnificent 5. 0-liter V8, the European-market 500SL delivers the effortless torque and grand touring character that defined Mercedes-Benz at its peak. Combined with the robust engineering philosophy inherited from the W114 and W116 era, the model offers a markedly different driving experience from Japanese-market examples affected by period emissions regulations, presenting the composure, flexibility, and elegance originally intended by Mercedes-Benz.

Among surviving R107 examples currently found within the classic Mercedes market, this particular car distinguishes itself through an exceptional provenance and remarkable level of preservation.

Notably, the car was formerly owned by the Vice Chairman of “CLUB 107,” one of Japan’s foremost communities dedicated to the R107 SL. A “Mercedes-Benz CLUB 107” plaque remains fitted to the side step, reflecting its distinguished background. Acquired directly by the current owner in 2000, this is a documented two-owner example with highly credible provenance.

Immediately after acquisition, the current owner entrusted the car to the Yanase Classic Car Center for a no-compromise restoration. Over the course of approximately two years, and at a reported cost of roughly JPY 11 million, the car underwent an extensive full restoration. A commemorative restoration plaque by WESTERN CORPORATION remains affixed within the engine bay as a testament to the work completed.

As part of the restoration process, the car was professionally refinished from its original Blue-Black exterior to an elegant Solid Black, a finish that beautifully accentuates the R107’s timeless, linear styling. The interior was comprehensively retrimmed in tasteful chocolate-colored leather, creating a refined contrast against the deep black exterior.

Further elevating the quality of this example, the dashboard — a known age-related weak point on the R107 — was luxuriously replaced with a rare brand-new genuine unit specially sourced from Germany.

From the presentation of the seats and wood trim to the presence of the period-correct McIntosh audio system, the car displays a remarkable level of condition that belies both its age and mileage, evoking the impression of a freshly delivered example.

Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that this extraordinary standard has been maintained for more than two decades since restoration. This is the result of continuous servicing by the respected classic Mercedes specialist “KUNST,” together with careful indoor storage protected from sunlight and humidity.

While restored classic cars are plentiful, encountering an R107 maintained to this standard — combining Yanase craftsmanship, enthusiast ownership, and disciplined long-term preservation — is exceedingly rare. This is a singular example, prepared for the discerning collector seeking one of the finest surviving interpretations of the R107 philosophy.
