Part of a private collection of classic motorcycles
One of the few 4-stroke sports mopeds available in the 70s
Restored and keeping a good degree of originality
The Honda Motor Company was founded by Soichiro Honda in 1937, initially producing piston rings for Toyota. They made their first motorcycle in 1949 and within 10 years had become the biggest producer in the world. They have gone on to manufacture over 400 million two-wheelers as well as millions of other power products. The 1960s S50 was a racier sibling to the Super Cub moped, powered by a SOHC alloy-head 50cc four-stroke engine. During the late 1960s, it was superseded by the SS50, with some subtle improvements and styling updates. A four-speed transmission was used at first, but later supplanted by a five-speed. The SS50’s lively performance made it a popular “Sixteener Special,” rivalling the two-stroke Yamaha FS1-E and Suzuki AP-50, but new British laws from 1977 spelt the end of an era as they restricted all new mopeds to 31mph.
This excellent SS50 was imported and registered with the DVLA in 2022, having seeming received some restoration in the past. Showing just 8, 790km on the odometer, it presents very much to original specification and in recent years has been preserved in a private collection. It is supplied with the current V5C and an MOT with no advisories until July, 2026, but we are advised that light recommissioning may be required.
