The Ranger A-20 Tourer is one of the most fascinating survivors of America’s early automotive industry. Built by the Southern Motors Manufacturing Association in Houston, Texas, in the early 1920s, it was intended to showcase a promising new automobile featuring a 31-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and quality engineering. However, the Ranger became entangled in one of the era’s most notorious stock fraud schemes. Company executives allegedly used a handful of completed vehicles, including the A-20 Tourer, to create the illusion of mass production by moving the same cars between the factory and showrooms to impress prospective investors. Despite millions of dollars being raised through stock sales, only a small number of Rangers were ever built before the company collapsed. Today, the surviving Ranger A-20 Tourer stands not only as a rare and well-engineered automobile but also as a remarkable reminder of an ambitious venture overshadowed by financial deception and one of the most unusual fraud cases in early American automotive history.
