SUMMARY
Originally supplied in September 2007 by Lancaster, Europa, Sheffield, this very late, last of the line W203 Estate features the rare and sought after Sport specification, which includes upgraded seats, suspension as well as AMG bumpers and side skirts. However, in true Mercedes fashion of that era, although it feels solid and planted on the road, it isn't overdone and is still retains its the trademark very comfortable ride.
I first bought this car in Oxfordshire back in November 2022 from a couple who’d moved to The Cotswolds from London and distinctively remember how enjoyable the long drive home was, and how incredibly economical the car was. I then went on to spend almost £2K preparing the car and in April 2023, I sold it to a lovely gentleman from Derbyshire who bought it to travel between his home near Alfreton to Norfolk where he had a boat. The car was used only in the summer months and never used on salted roads and was kept under a car port when not in use; in my experience a car port provides excellent storage conditions as it keeps the weather off the car, but allows it to breathe. In any case, he sold his boat in July of this year as he said at 70 years old was becoming hard work. Once the boat had been sold, he no longer had need for this Mercedes, so he asked me if I wanted to buy it back, which I jumped at as cars like this aren’t exactly in abundance these days; most W203 estate are (for want of a better word) are totally knackered.
During his three-year ownership, he covered just over 12, 000 trouble free miles over which it averaged an incredible 54. 4 mpg (see photo) Also, as a lifelong classic car enthusiast (he also owned a Jag E-Type, a Citroen Dyanne and a Capri Mk. 1) he understood how to properly look after a car, so not long after buying it, he also removed all the underside plastic panels, treated the underside, brake lines and the subframes with Bilt Hamber Dynax UC (clear anti corrosion wax) and refitted them to ensure the car stayed in the exceptional condition. He also serviced it annually but additionally also changed the oil/ filter every 1500 miles. As such the car is in superb order, I challenge you to fine a nicer S203 estate.
In my opinion, the W203 is really starting to come into its own now, even my mechanic who rarely comments on cars, say the W203 is a good strong car and easy to work on too. I also think the design has aged very well indeed, yet still very much feels very solid, like a Mercedes of old. The OM646 engine in this car, is regarded as one of Mercedes most durable units and regularly proven to reach six figure mileages with absolute ease, so at a mere 104, 000 miles, which is very low for any car of this age, let alone a Mercedes Estate, this car is just about run in. As an example, a few years ago travelled in a Mercedes W211 E220CDI Taxi in Portugal (same OM646 engine) that had covered an impressive 823, 000 kms; the driver told me it was all on the same engine and transmission. The OM646 in this car is in "200 tune" where I think the performance and economy are perfectly balanced, so although there's plenty of low down torque for overtaking and effortless cruising, the fuel economy as I've previously mentioned, is superb for a car of this type, and strangely for a diesel of this era, its ULEZ compliant too. As I’ve said, the car really does look the part, and has to be one of prettiest Estate cars of the era, so if you’re looking for a something practical, cheap to run but with a bit of class, then this is for you.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
