The MGB appeared in 1962 as the successor to the MGA and represented a clear technical step forward. Whereas earlier MGs still used a separate chassis, the MGB adopted a unitary body structure. That made it more modern, more rigid, and more practical, without sacrificing the typical British sports-car feel. And that is precisely why the MGB became such a success.
More than half a million examples ultimately found their way to enthusiasts around the world. The car was affordable, easy to maintain, and above all tremendous fun to drive. Not especially fast, but lively enough to keep you fully engaged on a winding country road.
This example was delivered new in California in 1971 and was originally what is known as a “Blue Plate” MG. That means the car remained registered in the same U. S. state for a long period of time, something many enthusiasts consider an interesting addition to its history.
In the 1990s, the car was fully restored. That restoration was also extensively documented. The MG is accompanied by a clear photographic record of the work, together with a file containing invoices dating back to 1991. As a result, you are not only looking at an attractive car, but you also gain a good understanding of the work carried out over the years.
The body is finished in Tartan Red, combined with a black interior. A classic combination that suits the MGB perfectly. Red, black, chrome, and a low windshield: it does not get much more British than that.
Another welcome feature is the overdrive. Especially on longer journeys, it is a particularly useful addition. With a simple operation, engine speed drops, the car settles down, and the MGB suddenly feels surprisingly well suited to covering longer distances. Top down, four-cylinder engine up to temperature, overdrive engaged when the road opens up, and then simply drive. Just that classic British feeling that has made the MGB so beloved for more than sixty years.
