Less than two-and-a-half years after its initial conception, the Mini was officially launched at the 1959 Motor Show, having been shown to the motoring press eight days previously. BMC chose to market the car as the ‘Austin Se7en’ and ‘Morris Mini Minor’ before ‘Mini’ became a marque in its own right in 1969. Introduced in October 1996, the so-called Mk7 or MPi Mini was the last evolution of Alec Issigonis’ iconic design. Boasting a front-mounted radiator, driver’s airbag, taller final drive ratio, multipoint fuel injection and side-impact door bars etc, it proved a fitting swansong for one of the world’s favourite cars.
Originally supplied by Caffyns Rover Brighton as the top prize in a raffle to celebrate the 1999 Italian Job Charity Event it was won by the vendor’s mother who always said ‘there’s no point in buying a raffle ticket as I never win!’. It has remained in family ownership ever since and used as a runaround and weekend car. In 2014, the Mini was sent to MiniSport in Padiham Lancashire for major restoration works which included stripping the bodywork to bare metal. Completed to a high standard, the cost totalled over £10, 800 at the time. There is photographic evidence along with invoices on file documenting the myriad of works carried out. Now displaying c. 29, 000 miles and in good overall order, over £2, 300 has been spent since 2016 on servicing, a fuel pump in 2021 and most recently brake calipers/ slave cylinder and a new clutch slave cylinder along with a fresh service in June 2026.
