In 1956, Rumi evolved its famous Formichino, literally "little ant" in Italian. Launched in 1954 to compete with Vespa and Lambretta, this scooter immediately distinguished itself through its original design and stunning cast aluminium bodywork. Designed with an almost artistic approach by Donnino Rumi, it is today considered one of the most singular Italian scooters of the 1950s.
It received a horizontal twin-cylinder 2-stroke 125 cc engine, air-cooled, developing approximately 6. 5 bhp and paired with a 4-speed gearbox. Its monocoque aluminium structure, particularly lightweight and rigid, contributed to its unique character. In 1956, the Formichino notably benefited from a redesigned rear bodywork in two sections as well as storage located beneath the seat.
This 1956 example presents itself in a particularly touching condition. Its current owner has paid particular attention to preserving this rare machine, in order to maintain all its authenticity and original charm.
With its twin-cylinder engine, its aluminium construction and its history intimately linked to competition—the Formichino having notably won the Bol d'Or several times—this Rumi 125 constitutes today a particularly sought-after collector's piece. A rare machine full of character, which will appeal to enthusiasts of Italian scooters and atypical mechanics from the 1950s.
