1963 PANTHER 120 650CC COMBINATIONRegistration number: ESU 822Sidecar: Busmar Double AdultThis vehicle had a new fuel tank fitted in 2025 and has been used this year.A quintessentially British motorcycle combination, this Panther Model 120 represents an era when the heavyweight single-cylinder motorcycle served as practical family transport, combining considerable mechanical character with the ability to carry both passengers and luggage. Manufactured by Phelon & Moore of Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, the Panther became renowned for its distinctive forward-inclined engine, a configuration that earned the marque its enduring reputation as one of Britain’s most individual motorcycle manufacturers. The Model 120, produced from 1959 to 1966, represented the later development of this celebrated design. At its heart lies a 645cc, air-cooled, four-stroke single-cylinder engine, inclined forwards at approximately 40 degrees and forming a structural element of the frame. Producing around 28bhp, the generously proportioned engine delivered the steady torque and unhurried performance ideally suited to sidecar work. A four-speed Burman gearbox completed a mechanical package renowned for its robust, purposeful character. This example is equipped with a Busmar Double Adult sidecar, a configuration that evokes the days when the motorcycle combination was an affordable and versatile means of transporting the family. The Panther’s substantial single-cylinder engine and sidecar-friendly characteristics made it particularly well suited to this role, earning such machines a loyal following among working families and touring enthusiasts alike. Registration ESU 822 is associated with a Panther Model 120 combination that was reportedly restored by enthusiast S. Barrett before subsequently changing hands. The extent and date of the restoration should be confirmed by prospective purchasers. With its distinctive engine layout, unmistakable period presence and evocative sidecar configuration, this Panther offers a particularly characterful alternative to the more conventional British motorcycle of the period. An appealing proposition for the enthusiast of traditional motorcycle combinations and an engaging reminder of Britain’s rich motorcycling heritage. This vehicle is located near from Newton Abbot, Devon TQ13 where it will need to be collected.
