For sale is a LHD 1955 Renault 4CV correctly registered in the UK. The rear-engine layout and light body (weight all-up is about 500-550kg I believe) make this a very interesting proposition.
The previous owner (the late Richard Lewin) had a great deal of work done since he bought it in France in June 2007 already retro-fitted with the larger 956cc engine, 4-speed 'box, 4-wheel discs and at least rear suspension from an early 60's Renault R8 which is a very significant upgrade over the original 750cc 3-speed. It also has 13" Gordini or Alpine wheels shod with new 185 70 13s (rear) and 165 70 13s (front). The wider track and tyres explain the expertly flared arches on the steel wings. There is a 15" spare wheel of original spec. There are additional gauges, and the original fuel-tank which lived under the rear seats has been replaced by a front-mounted Mini unit which will put more weight on the front suspension.
Long-term rust-proofing is not apparent and there is apparently some catching of a front calliper on the inside of a road-wheel, also a brake fluid leak, so any road-test will be very even short and local.
The bucket seats have been re-trimmed professionally, there is some spare fabric, the light-units and chromium trim are original. The body-work is stunning, said to have cost £3k. There are no internal door trims nor headlining. The cooling system has an electric fan added, controlled from the dash but maybe also thermostatically controlled (I think). Safety-wise there are no seat-belts, but it has (one-off) non-original tubular steel bumpers.
With this sale will come the option of an original 4CV 750cc engine and 3-speed gearbox (conditions unknown) if wished (separately) and quite a lot of relevant books on 4CV and Renault history, also 2 manuals for R8s and many contact details for spares.
Plainly whatever your plan there is still work to be done. You can work out your own options, but full restoration is one, or it's a feasible option for a Hot Rod, I am told, since there is a lot of room in the back for other engine transplants, or of course it could make a brilliant Classic trials or rally vehicle if suitably modified, I imagine. It's currently UK licensed till November, (£0) not MOT'd (I believe it's not necessary) and insured for me to drive. I can take you out for a short spin locally.
I can deliver on a trailer depending on distance and time, for the cost of the diesel. PM me with a phone no for serious queries only. I will not accept returns, I will accept cash only, no credit cards or PayPal.
