Rarity
This is a late 1973 model P1800ES. #6981 of only 8077 produced for the model years 1972 and 1973. Only sold in the US and an instant hit at dealer showrooms, this gorgeous ES likely caused quite a spike in traffic at the then staid, Volvo dealer.
Exterior.
Fresh Volvo Gold Metallic two stage respray over original green. Clearcoat has been buffed to a high sheen and looks amazing. Excellent panel fit. Laser straight. New chrome and trim. New windshield. Excellent glass. See the pictures. Zero nicks, Zero scratches.
- This ES features the rare factory gold paint. This was the additional cost metallic paint and rare in 1973. The brochures and period advertising, some of which are included, usually featured the Gold P1800 ES with Black interior.
- The Air Conditioning, Am Fm Radio and the 4 Speed with Overdrive topped out the option list. You could downgrade from here but this was the “fully loaded” car.
Wheels, Tires
Factory steel wheels with Chrome trim rings. Newer tires.
Engine
Volvo’s 3 million mile B20 engine runs excellent. Check Irv out here for an idea of how long these cars last. Upgraded to Weber Carburetor. The Bosch Jetronic fuel injection is boxed and goes with the car. Factory Air Conditioning is in place. New fuel pump, tune and radiator service.
Transmission
Smooth shifting manual transmission with Laycock overdrive works well.
Braking, Steering
4 wheel power disc brakes have been refreshed and work properly. The steering box was rebuilt to factory specs. Front wheel alignment just completed.
Battery

Fresh tune up, spark plugs, oil change, filter, wiper blades.
Trim
The trim is in excellent shape. Chrome and stainless have been reconditioned throughout.
Glass
Windshield is new. Installed 2-29. Other glass is original and excellent.
Interior
The fresh Black seat upholstery is in excellent condition with no rips, tears or abnormalities. Beautiful Cocoa carpeting. Nice headliner. New dash caps.
- The Air Conditioning. Dealer adjustable front seat tracks have been set to the most rearward position. We can reset these forward for drivers under 6’ tall. Factory console and floor shifter. Folding rear seat. Original gauges in place.
Odometer
The odometer shows 127310 miles and operates properly.
DMV
The title is clear and all documentation is included. No back fees are due. No smog is required for California residents. Very low cost Antique registration for most US States.
Documentation
A thick build book with extensive documentation is included. There are detailed photos of the restoration work, documentation and receipts as well as period adverts and Volvo club enthusiast magazines.
