1948 Sunbeam Talbot 10 Sports Saloon.
What a find! This handsome car was rescued by us after being laid up in a nice dry Plymouth garage since 1962! The car is extremely original, the paint, the amazing interior, it really is a time capsule, ready for someone to carefully recommission and bring back to life.
The engine turns freely, the cable brakes still work (although obviously they would need fully checking before use), as far as we can tell, the car is complete apart from the hub caps, all the original tool kit, jack, etc is still in its place. The original suppliers plate (M. Thomas Motors, Plymouth) is still fitted to
the dash.
Most of the chrome looks like it will clean up well.
There were a number of lovely period items that we found in the car as can be seen in the pictures, these include an Eveready Bullseye torch, several road maps with no motorways on them, a postcard from London dated 1957, some souvenir banners from Hastings and Brighton, paper bags from Halfords with polish, points etc in them, a lovely brochure which illustrates all the adapted controls that could be fitted for amputees at the time. There are a couple of newspapers from 1961 and 62, a glass Mobil oil bottle as well as a 'Gentleman's'' book with tasteful photos of scantily clad females!
There several old tax discs which will help in the reallocation of the original registration number, which because the car has been off the road so long, isn't on the DVLA database
The bodywork is very sound as can be seen in the pictures, there is a bit of rust in the bottom of the back doors and some of the panelwork has some surface rust, but for the most part it would be lovely to clean the car up and use it as an "oily rag" car, perhaps doing some minor localised paintwork where required. (its only original once!).
This is probably the longest stored car we have ever found, and probably the most original, it is a lovely project, which we are very unlikely to stumble across the like of again for a very long time if ever, so grab it while its available, otherwise we may be tempted to keep it for ourselves!
