Regrettably up for sale is my 1962 super original so22 Splitty. Originally from Oregon in the States she was imported a few years back by the previous owner. I have lots of history, pictures and stories but will try and keep this to a for sale add.
Being an So22 it is very rare. The bus was made in Germany and from the very start it was destined to be a Westy. What makes an so22 different is the removable interior, which can be quickly unclipped returning the bus to a microbus once more. Because of this the inside is all that of a bus, cloth headlining, bus doorcards with grab handles, even the factory rubber mat is present underneath the wooden floor but has NO holes for the microbus seats which prooves it was destined to be a so22. Even the M codes link up the show this is an original so22 and not just a bus with the interior added. As far as I am aware there are only a very very small handful of original so22 westfalia's left in the world, and not many can be as good as this one.
Since owning the bus I have pretty much totally recommissioned everything. Here is a list of what has been done...
- Completly re-built all brakes (all new cylinders, pads, lines)
- Cleaned and re-fitted gearbox (new mounts, gators etc)
- Undersealed and painted whole underneath in OG colour
- Re-painted anything else underneath (spring plates, hubs etc)
- All electrics gone through, Indicators fitted to rear fogs and UK headlights fitted (All 12v)
- 1300cc Engine cleaned up, serviced and fitted (Just fitted brand new exhaust and tail pipe)
- Interior all removed, cleaned, protected and re-fitted
- Exterior mostly original paint cleaned/ polished
- x2 very small bits of welding done and blended
- Small amount of bodywork done to LHS
- All opening windows fitted with new rubbers
- New door rubbers all round
- 4 New shock absorbers
- New clutch
- New track rod ends
- New steering arm
- New replica canvas for bunk (original included)
- New Cali style plates
- MOT'd taxed (free) and fully UK registered
Interior wise it is like a timewarp, the rear although worn in places is 100% original. Included is some orginal westy fabric if you wanted to repair seats. The wood is all great condition. Headlining has some rips. The front seat is the original humped seat which has came apart in a few places but is original to the bus. All windows are factory popouts.
Exterior is again super original, most of the paint is original, and other than 2 small bits of welding, one because of being dented and the other being a small rusty hole the van is unwelded. There is great patina but she is by no means "ratty!" The rear arches were professionally raised back in the 70's to accomodate a set of banded south African Sprints! The drivers door was replaced years back with an original paint door. Every other panel/ door is original to the van. The engine bay has had a few bits of tinwear replaced as one panel had been altered in the past.
Included in the sale is the original awning which is in superb condition, no rips at all, all poles present, almost as good as new. Also included is x2 bunk beds, one original fabric and poles and one re-make.
I have used the bus lots since owning her, driving all over the UK, and recently driving over 1600 miles round France, Germany and Belgium without a single issue.
I have lots of paperwork and a few spares and bits and bobs too.
This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody either as a great investment as prices seem to be going up and up at the moment, or simply as a practical camper ready to be used and be proud of.
She will come with a years MOT and is ready to go.
