1963 Sunbeam Alpine Series II GT.
This exceptionally pretty Series II is a rare and desirable car in the UK as most early Alpines were exported to the US. This is a genuine GT variant with an aluminium hardtop and stylish wraparound rear window which took its styling cues from contemporary American cars.
The car looks very smart in Rootes Balmoral Grey with contrasting black hardtop and dark red interior – a lovely colour combination in our view.
The Alpine has been the subject of a restoration by a previous, engineer owner and therefore has no signs of the corrosion which sometimes afflicts these cars.
The interior has been the recipient of considerable expenditure having been re-trimmed in dark red leather with matching red carpet. The walnut dash adds a touch of luxury and is offset by a handsome wood rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel.
Under the bonnet there is a 1725cc Holbay motor with twin choke Weber carburettor endowing the Alpine with sprightly performance which is enhanced by the overdrive which operates on third and top gears.
Recent fitments include new tyres, alternator, Lockheed brake servo and stainless steel exhaust. The car will be supplied with a fresh MoT.
Other nice touches include wire wheels with three-eared hub spinners and the period Sparto reversing lights which complement the finned rear wings of the early series Alpines. The desirable number plate 700 UYD comes with the car as well as a few items of spares including a brand new tonneau cover.
A great deal of time and effort has gone into this car, in particular sourcing all the hard to find parts for an early Alpine GT. There are a few small things here and there which could be improved upon but overall this is a very nice example of a rare and pretty car and with Alpine prices firming makes a sound buy.
As always we will happily consider any classic in part exchange.
