FOR SALE: An incredibly rare S70 AMG, 7-litre M120 V12, with just 66k miles.
The Mercedes S70 AMG was based upon the W140 series S-Class. The cars were built to special order and only a handful was ever made. They were only available in LHD and many were exported to the Arab Emirates and Japan. Due to their rarity, and the fact that they were individually commissioned for the super-wealthy, very little information about them has ever been published.
Each S70 was built from a long wheelbase S600, or 600 SEL for earlier examples. In each case the factory 6-litre V12 engine was removed and bored to a mammoth 7-litre displacement, which produced around 489hp. All this power was transferred to the rear wheels through a smooth 5-speed automatic gearbox. With this setup the two-tonne AMG could travel from 0-60mph in 5. 2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 186mph.
This particular example was manufactured in February 1992, leaving the Mercedes factory as a 600 SEL V12. It was supplied new in Japan following a full S70 conversion undertaken by AMG. Notable upgrades include AMG body styling, two-piece AMG wheels in black with polished rims, AMG sports suspension, AMG doorsill covers, and of course the incredibly rare handcrafted 7-litre M120 V12.
The Mercedes factory specification includes: Blue-Black Metallic paint (199U), Electrically adjustable individual rear seats and head restraints (224), Black leather upholstery (261A), Front folding armrest with tray (303), Additional blinker lamps (341), Multi-contour front seats (404/ 405), Orthopaedic front seat backrests (406), Version for Japan (498), Electric rear window roller blind (540), Rear air conditioning (582), Heat-insulating glass all-round (592), Sound system (810), CD changer in the trunk (818), Rear seat heating (872), Front seat heating (873).
This S70 is presentable throughout and certainly has a domineering presence on the road. The interior is in particularly good condition with the majority of electrics operating just as they should. Both the body and underside are entirely rust-free although there are some notable imperfections to the paintwork. The car has been in storage for the past four years and will require light re-commissioning in advance of regular use. It has covered just 106, 737km / 66, 323 miles.
