En 1926, Salmson lança sa Grand Sport (GS) dotée du célèbre 1 100 cm3 double arbre à cames en tête délivrant 40 chevaux. Quand la marque mit fin à son activité sportive en 1929, elle avait à son actif plus de 500 victoires en course et 10 records du monde.
La Salmson Grand Sport proposée est la quatrième des 128 construites en châssis Grand Prix et moteur double arbre atmosphérique, et le seul châssis à avoir été livré par la filiale allemande de Kehl am Rhein. Son premier et unique propriétaire allemand était Walther Rein, de Munich, qui fit carrosser le châssis en un élégant roadster, probablement par les soins de Weinberger à Munich. Elle était immatriculée IIA 19123 et possède encore ses plaques d'origine, ce qui est très rare. Elle est accompagnée de ses documents américains et de ceux de l'UE pour l'importation.
Après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, la Salmson fut racheté par un GI américain, Ernest Tuff, qui lui fit traverser le pays depuis la Bavière jusqu'à Bremerhaven où il l'embarqua pour la ramener chez lui, dans le Minnesota. En 1954, il démonta le moteur car il l'avait entendu produire un bizarre bruit de cognement, mais il ne le remonta jamais et la voiture resta longtemps dans cet état. Désormais âgé de 86 ans, Ernest Tuff a vendu l'année dernière sa "Sammy double arbre" au vendeur actuel, qui l'a fait restaurer de fond en comble pour lui redonner sa splendeur passée.

In 1926, Salmson introduced the Grand Sport (GS) model powered by its famous double-overhead-camshaft 1100cc engine producing 40 horsepower. When Salmson closed its racing department in 1929 they could look back on more the 500 race victories and 10 world records.
Offered here is the fourth of only 128 Salmson Grand Sport cars build with the Grand Prix chassis and the normally aspirated twin-cam engine, and the only chassis delivered through their German branch in Kehl am Rhein. The first and only German owner was Walther Rein of Munich, who had the chassis bodied with this handsome roadster coachwork, probably Locally in Munich by Weinberger. The car was registered 'IIA 19123' and, most unusually, the original licence plate is still with the car, which also comes with a US Title and EU import paperwork.
After WW2 the Salmson was bought by an American GI, Ernest Tuff, who drove the car cross-country from Bavaria to Bremerhaven and shipped it to his home in Minnesota, USA. In 1954, Tuff dismantled the engine after he heard a strange knocking noise coming from it, but he never rebuilt the engine and the car sat in the same spot for many years. Now 86 years old, Ernest Tuff sold his 'twin cam Sammy' last year to the current vendor, who has just completed a 'last nut and bolt' restoration to return the car to its former glory.
