Launched in 1964, the Ford Mustang quickly became an icon of American motoring, embodying the spirit of freedom and sportiness of the 1960s. One of the most iconic versions is the Mustang California Special, launched in 1968 to appeal to West Coast customers. This limited edition, recognisable by its GT/ CS side stripes, special wheels and exclusive badges, was distinguished by a unique style inspired by the Californian atmosphere. Even today, the California Special is sought after for its distinctive design and heritage, perfectly symbolising the muscle car DNA and boldness of the original Mustang. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The model on offer is a 1968 Ford Mustang GT California Special in a magnificent configuration typical of the era. The vehicle is matching, was restored in 2023 and is in exceptional condition. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CONFIGURATION & HISTORY This rare California Special, designed by Carroll Shelby, was delivered new on 20 September 1968 to the Ford Hensley-Anderson dealership in California. Only 3, 807 examples were produced, and there are less than a dozen of them in France today! Extensive period documentation is available, enabling us to trace the car's life in the United States until the early 2000s, during which time it had just 2 owners! The first owner kept the car for 17 years, until 1985. And it remained in the possession of the 2nd owner, located in Idaho, until at least 2001. Having arrived in France in 2019, it has mainly only had one owner, its current owner having only recently acquired it and not having driven it. The vehicle is matching colours and comes in period Diamond Blue, with vinyl roof, side stripes and dark blue lettering. The interior is in matching biton blue leatherette. The Mustang California Special is powered by the 289ci V8 (4. 7L). Our model was delivered with the original 4-speed automatic gearbox, power steering, oversize brake discs and 'Deluxe' seatbelts. It was also fitted with electronic ignition, Edelbrock carburettor, aluminium oil sump, stainless steel exhaust, PowerMaster shock absorbers, electric blower and Rocket Performance alloy wheels. MAINTENANCE A large number of period invoices, from 1971 to 2001, are present, enabling the vehicle's history to be traced. Significant work was carried out in 1981 on the mechanics, bodywork and interior. The starter, electronic ignition and spark plug wires were replaced in 2020 by Mustang & Family. The lighting system was also refurbished at the same time. The vehicle has seen little use since major mechanical work was carried out in 2023. A standard service was carried out in June 2024. No work is required, with the possible exception of the tyres, which are slightly worn but date from 2009. CONDITION The chassis and body were restored by the previous owner in 2023 and the vehicle is in superb condition. The recent expert report indicates that the upper structure of the vehicle is free from visible perforating corrosion or apparent deformation. The underbody and floorboards are free of perforating corrosion. There are no visible accident scars. The vehicle identification is in accordance with the documentation, with a Marti certificate in support. The paintwork is very attractive, with no major defects. The leatherette upholstery is very well preserved. However, there are two small tears in the driver's seat.
