Launched in 1964, the Ford Mustang quickly became an icon of American motoring, embodying the spirit of freedom and sportiness of the 1960s. Among the most iconic versions is the Mustang California Special, born in 1968 to appeal to West Coast buyers. This limited edition, recognisable by its GT/ CS side stripes, its distinctive wheels and exclusive badges, stood out with a unique style inspired by the Californian vibe. Today, the California Special is still sought after for its distinctive design and heritage, perfectly symbolising the DNA of the muscle car and the audacity of the original Mustang. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The model we offer is a 1968 Ford Mustang GT California Special in a stunning, era-typical configuration. The car is matching, was restored in 2023 and is in exceptional condition. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CONFIGURATION & HISTORY This rare California Special version, designed by Carroll Shelby, was delivered new on 20 September 1968 to the Ford Hensley-Anderson dealership in California. Only 3, 807 examples were produced and today there are fewer than a handful in France! A substantial amount of period documentation is present and allows tracing the car’s life in the United States up to the early 2000s, a period during which it had only 2 owners! The first owner kept the vehicle for 17 years, until 1985. It remained with the 2nd owner, based in Idaho, at least until 2001. Arrived in France in 2019, it has primarily had only one owner there, its current owner having acquired it only recently and not driven it much. The vehicle is matching colours, presented in an era Diamond Blue with a vinyl roof, the side stripes and inscriptions in dark blue. The interior is in blue two-tone faux leather. The Mustang California Special is equipped with the V8 289ci (4. 7L). Our model was originally delivered with an automatic 4-speed gearbox, power steering, upgraded brake discs and ‘Deluxe’ seat belts. It has also been fitted with electronic ignition, an Edelbrock carburettor, an aluminium oil pan, stainless steel exhaust, PowerMaster shock absorbers, an electric fan and Rocket Performance alloy wheels. MAINTENANCE A large quantity of period invoices from 1971 to 2001 are present, allowing the vehicle’s history to be traced. Major work was carried out in 1981 on the mechanics, bodywork and interior. The starter, electronic ignition and plug wires were replaced in 2020 by Mustang & Family. On that occasion the lighting system was also rebuilt. The car has seen little use since major mechanical work in 2023. A standard service was carried out in June 2024. No works are anticipated, apart from possibly the tyres, which show light wear but date from 2009. CONDITION The chassis and body were restored by the previous owner in 2023 and the car is in superb condition. The expert appraisal, carried out recently, notes that the vehicle’s upper structure is free from visible perforating corrosion or apparent deformation. The underbody and floors are free from perforating corrosion. No accident history is evident. The vehicle identification matches the documentation, with a Marti certificate to support it. The paint is very good, with no major defects. The seams and flushness of the body panels are uniform. The interior is also in very good condition. The carpets are immaculate, with no wear or stains. The faux-leather upholstery is very well preserved, though there are two small tears at the front seat cushion. This superb Mustang GT/ CS starts, runs and stops perfectly, delivering an excellent driving experience! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The vehicle is sold with two sets of keys, the 2025 expert appraisal, a Marti identification report, its owner’s manual and original ownership documents, numerous maintenance invoices from the US and a collection of original parts (including original rocker covers, original ignition, extra rear bumper…).
