Atelier des 1000 presents for sale this sublime Mercedes 280 SEL 3. 5 Type W108 in an elegant and typified marque configuration with this champagne two-tone metallic paint and its black roof matched to a genuine black leather interior.
The SEL was the flagship of the star brand; the opulence and luxury of this limousine marked its era.
Unlike the W109, the 108 retains its traditional suspension, which is more reliable and far cheaper to maintain.
This 280SEL is of French origin and one of the rare long-wheelbase versions fitted with the famous 3. 5L V8 developing 200 hp; indeed only 951 units were produced.
The vehicle has undergone a thorough mechanical restoration, including a complete engine overhaul 7, 000 km ago.
A file of invoices accompanies the vehicle for nearly €20, 000 over the last six years, and we have mileage records since 1992 when it totalled 37, 800 km.
A duplicate key is provided, as well as old technical inspections and an expert report.
The engine runs beautifully; it underwent restoration to professional standards, with many parts replaced including:
- cylinder heads
- camshaft
- piston rings
- rod bearings
- crankshaft bearings
- oil pump chain
- timing chain
- complete gasket kit
The four-speed manual gearbox operates correctly, gear changes are smooth; the clutch behaves well and shows no signs of wear. The hydraulic clutch control circuit was replaced last year.
The exhaust system was also redone a few years ago and allows you to appreciate the V8 sound in a refined and elegant atmosphere.
The cooling system has likewise been refurbished, including radiator overhaul; replacement of hoses and thermostat.
The power steering shows no play; the running gear has been renewed, notably replacing track rods, ball joints and the steering damper.
Braking is provided by four discs and is perfectly effective and balanced; the rear calipers have recently been replaced.
The Baroque-style wheels are shod with tyres in very good condition.
The paintwork is very good and shines; according to the previous owner it has only been repainted once.
The vehicle is fitted with yellow headlights, particularly sought after by enthusiasts.
The bumpers and all the chrome are in very good condition and gleaming.
The undersides are healthy and well-kept, as is the vehicle, and are obviously free of perforating corrosion.
The interior is harmonious; the wood veneers are well preserved and display a lovely overall patina, the dashboard is not cracked and the VDO instrumentation is fully functional.
Regarding the upholstery, the front seats have been restored while retaining the original patinated leather. The looped carpets as originally are in perfect condition and the headlining is defect-free.
The vehicle is equipped with electric windows.
