Peugeot 201 Saloon 1929
Company/ History
The Peugeot brand has existed for decades. In 1810, the brothers Jean-Pierre II and Jean-Frédéric Peugeot transformed the family grain mill into a steelworks. There they produced tools, springs, saw blades and, later, household items such as coffee mills. The company became increasingly interested in mechanical devices and, in 1882, Peugeot launched its first bicycle: the famous “Grand Bi”.
After years of experimenting with new mechanical techniques, the first Peugeot car equipped with a Daimler petrol engine was built in 1890. From then on, Peugeot became a genuine car manufacturer.
The Peugeot 201 was unveiled for the first time in 1929. It was designed as the marque’s rescue vehicle, owing to the economic crisis Peugeot was facing.
To survive, Peugeot needed a small, economical and affordable car, and the 201 was designed to be cheap to produce and inexpensive to run.
