Description
In 1953, Mercedes-Benz announced its project to build a roadster based on the Ponton saloon. American importer Max Hoffman then insisted that this new car should resemble as closely as possible the 300SL coupé.
Thus, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL takes on features from the butterfly-wing-style 300SL, notably its front end design and its very similar fenders.
This roadster is primarily designed for the North American market, the main outlet for this type of car. Compared with the 1954 prototype, the production version adopts a floor-mounted gear lever rather than one on the steering wheel, a choice better received by American customers. The air intake on the bonnet also disappears.
Presented as a sports car, the 190SL is in reality a fast and comfortable touring car, ideal for long distances. It embodies the spirit of “Sport Leicht” (light sport), foreshadowing the future generations of SL, synonymous with luxury and refinement.
The model offered, dating from 1956, belongs to the first generation, recognisable by its small rear lights and its more discreet chrome trim. Restored a few years ago, this 190SL features deep black paint, perfectly aligned panels and a three-seat red leather interior with timeless charm.
The mechanics, gearbox, running gear and brakes all operate perfectly. This Mercedes 190SL for sale has passed our inspection successfully and presents today as a superb opportunity for any enthusiast of classic convertibles.
