Description

CHASSIS NO. U84928 ENGINE NO. U84928 DOCUMENTS : Valid Portuguese registration document, certificate of historical interest, copy of serial number (Kommissionsnummer), photos of restoration From a private Portuguese collection Rare sports convertible, one of only 47 produced in 1932 Considered by Mercedes-Benz collectors to be the "little brother" of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SSK Elegant and refined Sindelfingen bodywork A classic expression of German sports-touring car design of the early 1930s The Mercedes-Benz 370 S Mannheim was produced for only two years, from February 1931 to February 1933. A total of 195 chassis were produced, of which 64 in 1932. Considered by Mercedes-Benz collectors as the 'little brother' of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SSK, this model was offered by the factory in two versions: a two-seater sports convertible and a sports version. Convertible and two-seater roadster. The cabriolet had a spacious and elegant boot, a spare wheel mounted at the rear or on the sides, and a padded soft top. The chassis 370 S Mannheim was designed as a top-of-the-range mid-size saloon, powered by an imposing 3. 7-litre six-cylinder engine that gave it an advantageous power-to-weight ratio, lively acceleration and a top speed of 130 km/ h. Production was very limited. Production was very limited. In 1931, 90 sports cabriolets were delivered by Sindelfingen, a number that fell to 47 units in 1932 and 12 in 1933. The 370 S sports cabriolet was a truly exclusive car, and although the 370 S was not a pure sports car, it did achieve some sporting successes in 1931, including two gold medals in a 10, 000 km event and second place in the endurance test organised by the Berliner Tageblatt. However, his favourite venues were the German concours d'élégance, held in prestigious locations such as Baden-Baden and Swinemünde. In this respect, little has changed. Today, a 370 S Sport Cabriolet would be welcome at concours d'elegance, where its harmonious lines, typical of the early 1930s, would delight the public. According to the order number (Kommissionsnummer), or production sheet, 69883, the 370 S, chassis no. 84928, was shipped on 27 October 1932 to London, UK. On 5 December 1932 it was delivered to Mr Van Moppes, its first owner. The car was then sold in the United States, where it was subsequently purchased by Mr Magalhães and imported into Portugal. This magnificent 370 S Mannheim was sold in 2007 by Mr Magalhães to its current owner and registered in Portugal (it still had an American registration until 2007).

In 2013, the current owner undertook a full restoration and since then the car has travelled approximately 300 km. In 2024, it won the 'Autobello' Concours d'Elegance in Portugal. The car is equipped with Zeiss headlights, a tool kit and a parts manual. The elegant and refined lines of the 370S Sport Cabriolet are as attractive today as they were in the early 1930s. This model is rarely offered for sale, and this is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a very special and elegant pre-war Mercedes-Benz cabriolet, which presents itself beautifully from every point of view.
