The Renault 5 occupies an important place in French industrial history. Launched in 1972, it was born at a time of great social and economic change, marked by large-scale urbanization and changing automotive needs. Motorists were looking for more compact, practical and economically popular vehicles.
The R5 was conceived as a modern, versatile car, a city car with a jovial allure. The design is innovative, with a rounded body and innovative plastic bumpers. Aesthetics aside, the little Renault embodies a new way of thinking about the automobile in the broadest sense, appealing to a huge audience: from learner drivers to families.
With over 5 million units assembled, the Renault 5 has spanned several decades and seen dynamic France evolve with the times. Today, it's a cult collector's item that brings back memories for everyone!
It was ordered new from the Renault Sodirac dealership in Chalon-sur-Saône in October 1982 by Madame M., who at the time didn't yet have a driving license. The order form stated that the little Renault had been chosen in TL finish, with the unusual option of "Bleu Schiste Métallisé" ... The invoice was in the region of 40, 000 francs. The car bears the provisional registration number 9105 WWA 71 when it leaves the garage (normally valid for 15 days). The car was delivered to the owner's home, but once the barn door was closed, it never saw the light or Burgundy again. Madame M, according to our research, eventually obtained her driving license, but was never very comfortable behind the wheel. The R5 sat there for 43 years, battery disconnected.
Miraculously, the barn is sound, and in January 2026 the doors open to reveal a car in an astonishing state of preservation. There's no corrosion, just a little mould on the interior plastics. The odometer still reads 12 km after more than 40 years. With the tires re-inflated, the little car is pushed into the light, and in the trunk we discover the definitive number plates lying there, along with the order form, the notebooks and the duplicate keys; nothing is missing. Nowadays, finding a car in a forgotten barn is a collector's dream, and when it's in original new condition, as the English call it, it's exceptional. This R5 is probably the only one of its kind in the world, so get bidding!
