The famous and mythical Triumph TR3A ‘Wide Mouth’ …
The Triumph TR3, produced from 1955 to 1961, is an iconic post-war roadster that bravely succeeds the TR2. Retaining the classic yet refined styling of its predecessor, it is equipped with a more powerful engine (4 cylinders – 2 litres) and its equipment was progressively enhanced, notably by adopting front disc brakes and more advanced suspension! This model was very well regarded in the United States and successfully campaigned in numerous competitions, earning its reputation as a sporty, robust and… affordable gem. The TR3 was produced in 13, 377 units between 1955 and 1957, after which, in the summer, it was replaced by the TR3A and its evolutions: new grille (“wide mouth”), recessed headlights, new taillights and bumper, engine development to 100 hp with a modified cylinder head, etc… The TR3A, more developed, would subsequently be produced to 90% for the United States until…1961, the date on which the TR4 would take over in the famous TRIUMPH TR dynasty.
Our example is a TR3A factory-fresh in 1959, the year of its first registration in the United States. Our passionate owner later acquired it by buying it from American military personnel posted in England: “Imported”, mines clearance for isolated use, and French registration issued in January 1994, so more than 32 years ago! The pearlescent white paint, very striking, was done at that time.
For reference, the engine of this two-seater roadster is a 2-litre (100 hp at 5000 rpm) equipped with two SU H6 carburettors, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox with reverse, rear-wheel drive.
The interior of our example is, like the rest of the vehicle, in fine condition notably with ivory SKAI upholstery of the finest effect, a very pleasant dashboard and a black soft-top in good condition!
The chassis is sound and free from deep corrosion.
The look is very attractive as the photos attest, thanks to the English style, the vivid colour, the vintage interior, the overall excellent condition, the very pretty chrome-spoked wheels and the well-integrated luggage rack, …
Since its purchase in 1994, our example has covered relatively few miles in total. Nevertheless, regular works have been carried out by professional mechanics known to our seller. We can cite: the cooling system fully rebuilt, the ignition system renewed in full, the battery recent and the electrical system modernised, the rear silencer replaced, the clutch control receiver changed, the filters renewed, tuning and optimising work on the bodywork and its various openings, braking system adjustments and maintenance, bearings and joints of the rear axle, etc… The vehicle has of course also undergone its routine periodic inspections.
The quality and seriousness of the mechanical interventions are obvious. No leaks of any kind are observed in any of the mechanical components of the beauty!
To date, the five-digit odometer reads 40, 400 miles (i. e. 65, 020 km).
The registration card is ‘Collection’. The Technical Inspection (not mandatory for this pre-1960 vehicle) was nevertheless carried out as a voluntary check and validated in July 2025.
A detailed and meticulous appraisal, characterised by excellent use condition and maintenance for this vehicle over more than 65 years, was carried out in July 2025. It is available in the owner’s file.
Trips and open-air excursions are therefore available to you in exceptional conditions, with this car of very beautiful engine acoustics, having covered little mileage, owned by its passionate owner for over 32 years, reliable, iconic and the object of everyone’s attention!
The asking price is very well positioned relative to the recent appraisal, the vehicle’s condition and the current market price for this model which truly does not leave anyone indifferent …
