The history
BMW took over Glas in 1966 and inherited the fantastic Frua bodies commissioned by Hans Glas; used in the Glas 1300 and 1700 GT Coupé. Another Frua design was the large Glas V8 coupé. At the time, BMW streamlined Glas’s sales programme and used the legendary 1. 6-litre high-rev BMW ti engine in the GT coupes, equipped with two twin Solex carburettors producing 105 hp. Additionally, among other changes, the front axle was revised and, in addition to other technical modifications, an opening was created for the famous BMW kidney grille. This stunning bodywork paired with this refined engine made for an extraordinarily successful combination, as confirmed by specialist motoring journalists as well. The only problem was that BMW launched the 02 Series at the same time and they competed with the 1600 GT. Unfortunately, after a build period of nearly a year and around 1, 250 units, production was halted in August 1968.
History of the BMW 1600 GT offered here
The BMW 1600 GT offered here is a second owner. The original period collector’s registration document is also available. This BMW was first delivered in August 1968 in metallic silver and was one of the last vehicles built by BMW with the special Frua finish. Over the years, this coupé has been repainted in the current colour by the first owner. According to the heirs, the metallic silver was simply too dull for the first owner. A few years ago we sold this 1600 GT to its 2nd owner. Despite all the fascination, he could not handle the car due to its size, which exceeded 2 metres, and so we now have the opportunity to offer this 1600 GT on the market for a second time. The engine remains original, the chassis and brakes are immaculate and the bodywork and paintwork are faultless to date. A Takata sports steering wheel is currently fitted, as well as contemporary alloy wheels. The original steering wheel is included. A touch of patina is of course visible, but contributes to the extraordinary flair surrounding this vehicle. Most BMW 1600 GTs are in the hands of collectors. In our view, this sports coupé should not be missing from any ambitious collection, faithful to the German motto: “Freude Fahren”.
