Classic Car Design offers this rare 1957 Mercedes 220S Ponton W180 coupé. At the time it was hand-built on the basis of the cabriolets, and Mercedes is believed to have produced only around 1, 250 (about 830 more in injection). The saloon was launched in 1953 and the coupé in 1956. The W180 generation marked a genuinely new era for Mercedes, breaking with pre-war models and notably adopting a body with integrated wings. This example appears to be of French origin, though the penultimate owner kept it for over 25 years.
Externally, this car is in overall satisfactory condition, though it shows some signs of wear and mid-quality paintwork. The many wheel trims and chrome mouldings are present, largely in good condition, though some will need restoration. The bodywork and underbody show no perforating corrosion.
Inside, this Mercedes 220S offers the distinctive ambience of 1950s/ 60s Mercs, blending leather, wood and chrome. All is in good condition; the leather upholstery and carpets were refreshed a few years ago. The headlining appears a touch older but is also in very good condition. The veneered woods are satisfactory and all instrumentation works.
Mechanically, under the long bonnet, you’ll find the 2. 2-litre six-cylinder engine fed by carburettors, delivering adequate performance and above all a sound befitting the car’s status. The mechanics have benefited from a recent overhaul, notably in carburation, ignition, some silent blocks and ball joints…
In summary, these models are rare on the market and even rarer in France; you could count them on one hand. This example, even though it requires some cosmetic work, is among the cheaper cars on the market and is priced at its expert valuation dating from more than four years ago. With this coupé, you are assured of driving a model that stands out from the ordinary.
