Description

One of the best Black Jack cars
Dave Morgan's 1971 Brabham BT35
Chassis No. BT35-8
Car that won European and British races in 1972

Delivered new to Ed Reeves in Formula Atlantic spec with a Hewland FT200 gearbox and a Cosworth BDA engine. Campaigned by Reeves and, at times, by the young talent Dave Morgan in Formula Atlantic in 1971.

In 1972, the F2 regulations allowed 2. 0-litre engines, but due to engine (and funds) shortages, Dave Morgan had to run a Cosworth engine of 1840 cc for the first European and British F2 race at Mallory Park.
The F2 rookie Dave Morgan won the race and graced Autosport’s cover for beating a prestigious lineup including Lauda, Peterson, Reutermann, Fittipaldi, Hailwood, Wollek, Gethin, Jabouille, Scheckter and Purley.
Morgan was so short of money that after sleeping in his caravan at Mallory Park on Sunday night, he woke up unable to pay for fuel to get home.
He then remembered that he had won the BP Man of the Meeting prize and used the petrol vouchers awarded to him.
Thanks to his performances in 1972, Morgan won the prestigious Grovewood Award, recognising Britain’s most promising driver, as well as a £1, 000 cheque.

When Reeves’ BT38 arrived, the car was sold to Australia and raced there until 1977, when it was put into storage.

In 2004, the BT35-8 resurfaced and was brought back to the UK in 2015 by John Hughes, Dave Morgan’s best friend, who commissioned a full rebuild by Simon Hadfield Motorsport, paying particular attention to period detail.

Recently, the car underwent a complete recommissioning by Biehl Motorsport in Germany and is ready to resume competition.

We suggest reading - details above to discover Dave Morgan’s memories of his great day at Mallory Park.
