Description
The Maserati Ghibli is a true thoroughbred GT, powered by a 4. 7‑litre engine developing 315 bhp. This twin‑cam V8 with a dry sump, equipped with four twin‑choke carburettors, distinguished it from the engine used in the Mexico and Quattroporte models of the same era, which employed a wet‑sump configuration. The chassis featured a simple but effective rear leaf‑spring suspension, also used on the Quattroporte II launched in the same era. The Ghibli was revealed at the Turin Motor Show in late 1966 on the Ghia stand, with deliveries beginning in March the following year. Named after a desert Egyptian storm wind, it could easily have sold on appearance alone. Its striking styling was the work of a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, who at the time was employed by the Ghia studio in Turin. Giugiaro himself describes it as: “A long, flat, very striking bonnet, a grille across the full width, retractable headlamps, a windscreen with a pronounced angle, wide, chunky position lights finishing with a vertical segment, and remarkably clean flanks even though the bodyline carries a lot of movement. The rear was raised for aerodynamic efficiency as well as functional reasons (the two fuel tanks are located behind the rear axle and have a very high neck).” Henry Ford II was so impressed by the Ghibli that he is said to have approached the Orsi family with a proposal to buy the company. The Maserati Ghibli became the jet‑set’s favourite car in the early 1970s, with Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Sellers, Claude François, Jean‑Paul Belmondo and Frank Sinatra, among others, among its proud owners.
The example we are offering for sale was delivered new in Belgium at the end of 1969 via the importer Staumont to Filature Oscar Loupart S. A. in Ensival, and was registered on 15 January 1970. The second owner was Edmond Péry – a renowned Maserati driver and known for his Apal marque – who bought the car in 1988 and kept it until 2004. The third owner wished to restore the Maserati to concours condition and had the car restored in 2009 at Carrozzeria Granturismo (later renamed Carrozzeria Touring) in Milan. The car was completely dismantled and repainted in the original Celeste Chiaro Metallizzato colour, which suits this Ghibli wonderfully. The interior was also fully restored, and the mechanicals were overhauled by Red Willow Racing (Paul Koot) in the Netherlands. The current owner (and thus the fourth) has owned the car since 2023 and continues to cherish it.
Recently, a full service and air‑conditioning repair were carried out at Mistral Classics in Belgium. These works are fully documented by invoices.
