The Chrysler New Yorker was produced by Chrysler from 1940 to 1996, embodying the brand's flagship model during its early decades. The name “New Yorker” was introduced in 1939. Until production ceased in 1996, it became the American model with the longest-running longevity.
In 1950, Chrysler introduced the hemispherical 180 hp (130 kW) FirePower engine.
This engine quickly became a popular choice among hot rod enthusiasts and racing drivers, a trend that persists today with the second generation of the same name. Vehicles equipped with the Fire Power Hemi could accelerate from 0 to 97 km/ h in 10 seconds.
The New Yorker also offered a true torque converter, and it was only with the transmission called “Matic Fluid” that it appeared; a 4-speed semi-automatic transmission that integrated the gear lever into the steering column.
As if that wasn’t enough in terms of equipment, it included a genuine automotive first: power steering, known at the time as Hydraguide.
