Description
Rare and iconic, this Mercedes 190 E 2. 3-16 is one of the most legendary sports cars of the 1980s.
Sportwagen Paris presents this example delivered new in France on 28 August 1986, which has just celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Introduced in 1984, the 190 E 2. 3-16 was born with a clear ambition: to make Mercedes a genuine rival to BMW in the sports saloon arena. To transform its sensible 190 into a characterful sports car, Mercedes called upon British specialist Cosworth, who developed a remarkable 16-valve cylinder head.
Under the bonnet sits a 2, 299 cc four-cylinder engine producing 185 bhp, particularly lively at high revs and extremely reliable.
Power is transmitted through a five-speed Getrag manual gearbox, recognisable by its inverted gear gate with first gear at the bottom.
Weighing just 1, 220 kg, the performance figures remain impressive: 0 to 100 km/ h in 7. 5 seconds, 1, 000 m from a standing start in 28. 7 seconds and a claimed top speed of 230 km/ h.
Currently showing 223, 500 km, this 190 E 2. 3-16 has benefited since 2023 from extensive mechanical restoration, including:
• Four brake discs, pads and linings
• Complete air conditioning overhaul: compressor, circuit, receiver and expansion valve
• Front suspension ball joints
• Idle actuator and idle control hose
• Primary exhaust manifold
• Water radiator
• Oil cooler
• Right rear wheel bearing
• Cylinder head gasket replaced as a precaution
• Oil level sensor
• Four injectors and their mountings
• Rear suspension arms
• Oil pressure transmitter
• Distributor cap
• Ignition rotor
• Spark plugs
• Oil and filter changes
Extensive work was also carried out at 180, 000 km, including notably:
• Complete clutch
• Full timing chain, tensioners, sprockets and guide rail
• Transmission shaft bearing and bearing
• Two rear suspension spheres with circuit bleed
• Rear subframe bushes
• Three differential seals
• Two rear shock absorbers
• Two engine mount bushes
• Four wheel bearings
• And numerous other works.
The engine is currently sound with nothing requiring attention.
