The Series 8 simply existed. Long, low and wide, with bodywork that looked more like a concept car than something you could actually order from a showroom. The pop-up headlights disappeared neatly into the nose, the roofline dropped over the cabin, and those characteristic C-pillar strakes gave the car a presence that still holds up today.
Here is a 1994 BMW 840Ci. Finished in Hell Rot — a shade that suits the car exceptionally well.
The red paint accentuates every line of the design. From the long bonnet to the muscular rear haunches, via that characteristic coupé silhouette, almost timeless. No unnecessary excess. Just design that works.
Beneath the bonnet sits BMW's V8, paired with an automatic gearbox. Exactly what you'd expect from a Grand Tourer of this size: powerful, comfortable and built to cover serious distances. The sort of car in which taking the long way home on a Sunday afternoon seems entirely natural.
And this particular example has an interesting story.
Originally delivered to Spain, the car remained there from 1994 to 2020, during which time it had only two owners. It was subsequently acquired by a Dutch collector, particularly drawn to the car's condition and its original cloth interior, remarkably well preserved for its age.
The 840Ci comes from an era when BMW still built cars with a very distinctive identity. The proportions, engineering and restrained design combine in a way that seems increasingly precious today.
Perhaps that's precisely what makes the 840Ci so appealing today.
