Description

History of the Alfa Romeo Montreal. Montreal, 1967. The whole world gathers at Expo 67, and amid the buzz stands a low, thoroughbred little coupé from Alfa Romeo, styled at Bertone. Visitors stop, marvel and come back. They naturally name it after the city where they fell in love with it. Alfa Romeo listens, and in 1970, at the Geneva Motor Show, the production version takes centre stage: the Montreal. Its lines are the work of Marcello Gandini, the man who was creating the Lamborghini Miura at the same time. And it shows. The louvres above the twin headlights, like half-closed eyelids. The NACA air intake on the bonnet. The six vents behind the doors. A car that looks fast even standing still, and unmistakably Italian. Beneath the bonnet beats a heart originally meant for the racetrack: an all-alloy V8 derived from the engine of the legendary Tipo 33. 2. 6 litres, four overhead camshafts, dry sump, SPICA mechanical fuel injection. Around 200 hp, a five-speed ZF gearbox, a limited-slip differential and roughly 220 km/ h at the top. And above all, that sound. Gruff at idle, muffled at mid-range, and at the top a metallic howl you never forget. Until 1977, just 3, 900 examples were built. The Montreal remained the only Alfa V8 of its generation: a Gran Turismo in the noblest sense, made for long distances, great emotions and that road to the sea you wish would never end.

Description of the Alfa Romeo Montreal offered here. The 1975 Montreal offered here wears what an Alfa should wear: Rosso Alfa, with an interior in deep black. A pairing that needs no comment. For eleven years it has belonged to a German collector, someone who knew exactly what was in his garage. And who, all those years, entrusted it to only one workshop: ours. First to the former Alfa Classic Center, now Scuderia Sportiva Servizio in Dortmund. Anyone who knows the Montreal knows what that means. The V8 and its mechanical injection demand skill, patience and a keen ear. This car has received all of that, year after year, service after service. And it is matching numbers. Under the bonnet still runs the V8 with which this Montreal left the factory. No replacement, no swap. Its own heart, from day one. Lift the bonnet and you reveal an engine bay as connoisseurs dream of it: authentic, well-kept, honest. On the injection cover, the original plate, a small piece of mechanical history from Arese. From the outside, the Montreal is in the best of spirits. The red paint gleams, the chrome sparkles, and every detail of Gandini's design is complete and beautifully preserved. Not to forget the Campagnolo wheels in the "turbine" design, the final touch of Gandini's concept. You step over the stainless steel sill plates engraved with the Alfa Romeo name and find yourself sitting low, snugly held in the black seats. Ahead, the wooden steering wheel; your hands find their place by themselves. A cabin that immediately makes you want to hit the road. This Montreal is presented in very good condition. You can see it has been loved.

Conclusion. There are cars you own, and there are cars that own you. The Montreal belongs to the second category. A Gandini design, an engine born on the track, matching numbers and eleven years of uninterrupted care by enthusiasts who know this car inside out. You don't come across this often. In fact, almost never. You turn the key and hold your breath for a moment. Then the V8 comes to life, and at the latest on the first throttle stab in a tunnel, you know exactly why you had to have this car.

Mad Max's visit shows just how fascinating this Montreal is. He examined it in every detail here, and his first impressions can be found in his Instagram reel: - details above. The road test will follow very soon. Che bella macchina. Andiamo. Montreal is far away, but this Montreal is just one test drive away.
