The Appeal

It’s said that the first car many people in the world see is a Land Rover, that may be true but the Beetle surely isn’t far behind. A classic in every sense of the word, and an established icon of counter-culture, cinema and every classic car show we’ve ever been to, the Beetle is a deeply charming vehicle – and often the first introduction many people have to classic motoring.

With the vast majority that are still on the road either being comprehensively restored or highly modified, finding a genuinely original example from the 60s is very unusual. And that’s what makes this smashing little car so exceptional – apparently it is completely unrestored cosmetically and is presented in largely original condition.

For anyone that loves the ‘Bug’, then such a well-preserved example from the mid-60s surely is the Holy Grail. Make sure you don’t let it slip through your fingers!

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in November 1965
  • Spanish registration documents
  • Very well preserved, but unrestored and unmodified
  • 92,409Km on the clock (five-figure odometer)

The Interior

  • Beige vinyl upholstery – predominantly original and in fine overall condition, with some wear to the driver’s backrest
  • The rear bench is in remarkably good order, while it appears that the front passenger squab may have been recovered at some point
  • The beige vinyl door cards exhibit some wear and patina, but are still quite presentable
  • Cream vinyl headlining shows some staining and age, but appears to be taut and undamaged
  • All of the controls and instruments look to be in nice condition, with an attractive level of natural wear and patina
  • There is a manual-adjusted sunroof fitted
  • Under the bonnet there is a useful luggage space, as well as a full-size spare wheel
  • The spare wheel well and floor of the front luggage space look to be nice and solid with no evidence of corrosion or damage

The Exterior

  • The smart cream paintwork wears a few marks and blemishes, as you’d expect, but still presents in nice overall condition that belies its age
  • All of the bodywork is remarkably straight and clean, with no notable or serious corrosion we could discern, just a few minor dents
  • We only noticed one notable dent, on the driver’s side front wing, which has resulted in some paint cracking
  • The brightwork still bears a fine lustre, with the vendor telling us that some of the pieces have been refreshed over the years
  • Underneath the car is in very good order, with clean, solid, straight floors and just a few spots of surface corrosion on the sills
  • It is wearing cream painted steel wheels, dressed with polished hubcaps and a set of tyres that appear to have good levels of tread

The Mechanics

  • 1300cc naturally aspirated flat-four
  • Four-speed manual transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • The vendor tells us that the car benefits from a new battery, refreshed brakes and refurbished engine
  • The vendor tells us that the car drives “perfectly”
  • The engine starts, idles and runs very nicely, with that traditional Beetle thrum

Summary

Largely original and unrestored, there can't be too many Beetles of this age left in this kind of condition. So make sure you don’t miss the chance to make this remarkable survivor yours!
