The Appeal

Flying the flag for front wheel drive prowess, in an undeniably beautiful little package.
Lancia had always been an innovative brand, just a look at the incredible legacy left behind by some of their models will attest to that. The Fulvia Coupe was certainly no different, styling naturally for an Italian car of the era, was nothing short of perfection and in a more unique turn, the car explored a quality front wheel drive layout. Paired to a series of brilliant engines the Fulvia would be received to critical acclaim by both the motoring press and the motorsport circuit which it would go on to dominate.
Lancia’s of the era have a great level of collectability to them and the Fulvia is no different. What we have here is perhaps one of the rarest of them all, a genuine RHD Series 1 Fulvia, this is certainly one to turn heads.

Of the limited number of Series 1s here in the UK it would seem as though nearly all are left hand drive variants with the vendor stating that as they are aware, this may be the only RHD example here in the UK. Extensively restored to the highest of standards, TVV 167F is surely one of, if not the best Series 1 Fulvia on the roads today. For the avid Lancia enthusiast, it seldom gets better than this.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 01/08/1967
  • Originally an Italian car, but a genuine factory RHD example
  • Brought into the UK in early 2012
  • Fully UK registered
  • Purchased by the current vendor in 2021, who commissioned a thorough restoration of the car
  • Accompanied by a vast collection of invoices for parts bought from Italy, France and the UK to restore the car
  • Original Italian Libretto (log book) present
  • Comes with an early Fulvia repair shop manual with detailed hand written documentation of the servicing and work undertaken on the car dating back to 1975
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the car’s historic status and age
  • Despite MOT exemption the car holds a current MOT valid with no advisories until June 2024
  • It should be noted that in a previous MOT the odometer reading was mistakenly put down in miles rather than kilometres, this has since been rectified in the most recent test
  • V5 registration document is present with the vehicle

The Interior

  • Exceptionally well presented cabin
  • In impressively original order with rare factory floor mats and original door panels
  • High quality upholstery and trim throughout
So much of what makes this particular so special is the quality to which it has been upheld and the impressive originality of it all, and that is perhaps most prevalent here in the interior. Upholstery and trim is brilliantly well presented throughout and works well to showcase the Fulvia as one of the best standing on the roads today.
The original wooden Lancia steering wheel for example has been painstakingly sanded and treated rather than buying and fitting a replacement and the well upholstered door panels have been left in their original form so as not to compromise on originality.

It is only the front and passenger seats and rear parcel shelf which have had to be replaced during the restoration, but a high quality set of faux leather black replacements were found and a new parcel shelf was installed in Armada Sand Beach. It is worth noting for those looking for maximum originality that the original seats removed from the car are still present and will accompany it on sale if a new owner wishes to get them restored.
A high quality dash panel takes precedence at the front, boasting excellent upholstery, great wood trim and a marvellous selection of neat and clean switchgear. A stand out piece to note is the period Voxson Junior radio which amazingly is still in good working order.

Carpeting is of a good high quality as well and has been protected by a rare set of factory striped Lancia floor mats which present well with just a few small areas of blemishing to be seen. The entire cabin is one of the utmost quality and any inspection will surely attest to that.
At the rear we find a neat and simple boot area which is showcased in a similarly high standard to the rest of the car.

The Exterior

  • Rare Series 1 variant
  • Extensively restored
  • Refinished in original Bianco Saratoga
  • New exterior chrome fittings
With the charming, elegant lines that could only come from a classic Italian automaker, the Series 1 Fulvia is a marvel to behold from an aesthetic perspective. Impeccable from every angle, the small, bold design is certainly a high ranker on the classic Lancia roster and garners adoring looks from just about everyone who sees it.
The Fulvia was surprisingly well preserved when it arrived in the hands of the current owner, but as the decision had been made to restore the car, it had to be done right and that included rectifying any corrosion. The findings were very limited on that front and just a few small patches around the size of a five pence coin were found on the passenger rear quarter panel and floor, which were promptly cut out and repaired, making a point to utilise as much original metal as possible. In addition to this a steel passenger side door skin was fitted rather than the normal aluminium; a steel replacement for the drivers side was also purchased but never fitted and will accompany the car on sale.
With any corrosion found taken care of the car was fully stripped to bare metal, etch primed and refinished in Bianco Saratoga, what we understand to be the car’s original colour. Naturally the paint is of an impeccable quality throughout with just an incredibly small touched in chip in the edge of the drivers side door being the only thing we could find in the way of blemishing.
External chrome trim is of a brilliant standard with new fittings and mouldings being sourced and fitted where needed, including replacement door handles, air intake vent and a  front grille badge. New rubber seals and moulds were also sourced for the door and windscreen surrounds. All five steel wheels were refurbished and refinished in white and housed within new Pirelli tyres. Mixing all of this together makes TVV 167F one of the finest presented Fulvias of any generation currently on the UK roads.

The Mechanics

  • 1.2 litre variant
  • Twin Solex carbs
  • Well presented throughout
  • Underside treated and resprayed
Making the Fulvia a front wheel drive model was certainly an unconventional choice but one that paid dividends. Lancia’s engineers got it just right and the Fulvia, from a dynamic perspective, was exceptional, seeing untold success on the motorsport circuits, namely in rallying.
This particular car is the 1.2 litre variant, and stands today in fine fettle from a mechanical perspective. Incredibly well looked after throughout its lifetime, the engine and driveline present in great form and in good working order. The four cylinder unit fires into life quickly and comfortably and in no time settles into a comfortable idle. The only thing the vendor reports that hasn't been done is a drain of the fuel tank.
Having had a recent oil change, the Fulvia is reported to provide a great overall driving experience with solid power delivery and crisp gear changes from the manual box.
Inspection underneath shows what looks to be an incredibly clean and solid underside, which as we understand has been treated and resprayed, something highlighted by some photos taken by the owner during the car’s most recent MOT test, which it passed with no advisories.

Summary

It’s not often a car can sell itself on just looks alone, but when they do they’re usually Italian. Naturally the Fulvia is one such car.
Impeccably styled, dynamically brilliant, the Fulvia is a marvellous example of Lancia on top form. Quite possibly the only RHD Series 1 here in the UK, and having been extensively restored to the highest of standards, TVV 167F is a wonderful example of the coveted nameplate and is enough to widen the eyes of even the most astute Lancia fanatic.
