The Appeal

One of the most popular periods of BMW manufacture.

Here’s 5 Series that is dressed as an M5, but this is a car that isn’t pretending to be something quicker than it really is.

Beneath that dark grey bodywork and M5 kit sits a very lusty 2.7 straight 6 motor. It may be coupled to an auto box, and short of some of the M5’s horses, but it can still impress with nearly 130 bhp available.

Nicely turned out with a two-tone leather interior and shiny new OZ wheels, this 525 looks the part and can live up to its appearance.

The History and Paperwork

  • Freshly Serviced
  • £2000 spent over the last year
  • MOT’d until June 23 with no Advisories
  • Current V5

Bought by the present owner 5 years ago without any documented history, the car has been brought back to spec and with a spend of £2000 in the last 12 months alone.

It has enjoyed a thorough mechanical and electrical health check and I am assured it drives impeccably.

There is some MOT history showing minimal mileage increments since purchase.

Work has been more than mechanical with the addition of a quality M5 style body kit and refreshed interior.

The Interior

  • Lovely Two-Tone Leather Seats
  • Original Dashboard and Instruments
  • Fully Functioning Electric Sunroof
  • New Sony DAB Head Unit with Bluetooth Connectivity

The interior is clean and is reflective of the car’s age with some wear on the steering wheel.

That aside, the newly refurbished leather seats are quite stunning with their two-tone design which has been continued into the new door cards. The carpets are in good order and the dash has no obvious flaws.

The owner has upgraded the in-car entertainment by adding a large screen DAB stereo with Bluetooth connectivity.

The panel sunroof works perfectly but there is some staining to the headlining.

The Exterior

  • Dark Grey Paintwork
  • M5 Body-Kit
  • New OZ Alloy Wheels with Tyres
  • DTM Style Tail Pipe supplied with the car

This car does not look 34 years of age as the paintwork has a nice deep gloss to it.

The addition of the M5 kit elevates the look and is then further highlighted by the spanking new OZ Split-Rim style alloys. A new back box has just been fitted with a straight single tailpipe, however, there is a DTM twin pipe finisher with the car if you wanted to complete the sporty look.

The body is not completely free of marks as there are a few little scratches and chips here and there, and there is a bit of bubbling happening on and near the sunroof.

The Mechanics

  • Recently Serviced
  • Smooth and Quiet 2.7 M20 Straight Six Engine
  • No Advisories on current MOT
  • New Front Springs
  • Fully Undersealed last month

The lack of documented history shouldn’t put any interested party off this car because the overall condition shows it has been cared for over its long 34-year life.

It is more likely that the history has been lost rather than servicing and maintenance not being done. It is certainly in fine fettle now and the owner has been prudent in getting the mechanicals fully checked while in his keep.

There have been a few repairs required with a new pair of front springs and dampers being required and a problem with central locking necessitated some new actuators.

The car has just enjoyed a minor service in September and at the same time has been re-undersealed.

Although not driven far for the photographs, the automatic transmission engaged smoothly without any knocks or lurching and no warning lights were appearing on the fully functioning dash when running.

Like many cars of this era, finding a good one is becoming more difficult.

This one however is particularly appealing because of the very nice overall condition.

The paint is good, the body kit raises its appeal and those wheels do set it off as a very attractive package. There has been attention to detail in replacing the seats and door cards which has enhanced the whole character of the car.

It may be short of the power of an M5 but this car represents a very affordable alternative and the 2.7 straight six will still be entertaining enough.
