1998 Mercedes-Benz C55 W202 AMG

• Incredibly rare RHD model
• Superb condition, inside and out
• Manufacture plus specialist history

The Background

The internally labeled W202, otherwise known as the C Class was built by Mercedes Benz from 1993 - 2000. Developed to replace the 190 series, this popular rear wheel drive, four door compact executive car came with an array of engine options as well as two body styles, saloon and estate.

This ‘C55 AMG’ was one of the most performance oriented and powerful models available, which also made it one of the most expensive. From 1998, if you were in the privileged position to be able to buy a brand new C43 AMG, Mercedes-Benz offered the option of upgrading the vehicle to the C55 AMG, an upgrade that replaced the 4.3L V8 engine to a more powerful 5.5L V8, an improved transmission and rear differential amongst other things.

As you can imagine, this modification wasn’t cheap and with the option only being available from 1998-2000 only 59 ‘C55 AMG’ models were produced, of them 27 were right hand drive.

The History

Built by Mercedes-Benz in 1998 and modified by AMG in July of the same year, this car was registered in the United Kingdom on the 5th August 1998. This unique car has spent its entire life in the United Kingdom and has been owned by a Lord, businessmen and enthusiasts, all of which have cherished and suitably serviced and maintained the vehicle in their care.

It has been the same ownership since 2005 where it has spent most of its life garaged. Regular MOT’s and maintenance have been carried out, even though the car has only covered 2,000 miles in the last decade.

The Paperwork

Original manufacture folder containing handbook and service portfolio is present, with Mercedes stamps up to 2005. Stacks of genuine part invoices are also present mainly from 2005 when the current owner purchased the vehicle and carried out some maintenance. In addition, a black AMG booklet confirming the C55 upgrades, navigation guide, MOT certificates from every year and a What Car magazine containing a detailed look into what a C55 is.

More importantly, there’s printed emails containing confirmation from AMG to previous owners that this is a genuine, AMG modified C55. Our best guess is that because this was probably one of the first C55 AMGs to be done, the DVLA could only put C43 on the registration document, which is how it is today, however the confirmation from AMG pictured should be enough to satisfy any future owner.

The Exterior

Finished in Brilliant Silver, this German powerhouse is in fantastic condition bumper to bumper. A couple stone chips on the bonnet are present but not very visible and a small scratch on the rear bumper but again very insignificant.

The silver metallic paint really helps give the car that executive look, it's very shirt and tie, yet it’s low stance and big wheels give it an impressive poise. Throughout, the paint and trims are all in very good order, it’s an exceptional vehicle. The factory 18’’ alloys are also unscrathed and wrapped in brand new rubber.

The Interior

Perfection continues inside this AMG, the black leather and plastic combination suits the car enormously, complimented by a carbon style plastic on the center console and door cards which really give the car a further executive feel.

The white AMG instrument dials, AMG branded steering wheel and floor mats are the only internal reminder of what you are sitting in, until the engine fires up anyway.

The Mechanics

The car was started and maneuvered a few times during our visit, each time there was no hesitation and no sounds other than the grumble of the naturally aspirated V8. From what we saw, the current owner has really enjoyed and cared for the vehicle and thanks to his knowledge and resources the car has been kept in top running order.

The Appeal

With less than 26 RHD C55 models made, this is an opportunity that doesn't come around often. It’s the ultimate W202 version , with confirmation it was done by AMG themselves. It’s a suit wearing, autobahn destroyer, class and muscle rolled into one, it’s an ultra rare vehicle in exceptional condition ready to be enjoyed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
