Description

RetroMarques Ltd is pleased to offer for sale on behalf of the owner: 1961 Lancia Appia Serie 3 Berlina (Saloon) ‘MAS 893’

An opportunity to own a rare, especially in RHD, Lancia Appia of the final, 3rd series (more power, better brakes, later interior and seating). Originally a South African car, the body is particularly sound and this allied with an as-new interior retrim and recent mechanical work make for an appealing, stylish, Italian starter classic!

Eng: MOT80739856 Note: Weber 36 DCD5 & manifold fitted, as per GTE & Sport models
Built: Durban, South Africa

History:
UK documents including MoT certificates, tax notices and tax discs, invoices for work (all since 2003 to date).
A copy of the South Africa registration document and last tax disc.
A collection of Lancia Appia magazine articles and an original Lancia Hyde Park dealer brochure!

Recently ‘MAS’ has been through a thorough checkover and brake system refurbishment including the rebuild of the brake master cylinder (stainless steel sleeved) and a new MoT test. On the road she is strong, partly we suspect as a result of the Appia Sport-spec Weber carb & manifold, the gearbox and column change nice and smooth, the steering precise and slop-free and the brakes pull her up straight and strong. Overall, she feels much more modern than her true age, a credit to Lancia’s design and engineering expertise.

Her paintwork is showing a good degree of patina and a viewer will either feel it is ‘nicely original’ or ‘not good enough’! Open the ‘clap hands’ doors and the pillarless design provides for amazing access to the interior and shows off the red leather (as new) very nicely. Much of her brightwork is either alloy or stainless and can be polished, so no concerns regarding pickled chrome!

A period Autotest report stated: ‘.. it outclasses many of its more modern rivals by its road manners, particularly its ability to take rough surfaces in its stride, and a general feeling of tautness and mechanical refinement throughout its structure… The engine gives a surprising performance for its size’.

In summary, a buyer looking for an affordable, family-sized, fun to drive starter classic or to add a Berlina to an Italian classic collection, then this late Series 3 Appia to Sport spec provides a stylish Italian solution!
