Great usable bike, not mint but perfectly presentable. I took it along to Bristol Classic Bike show in the summer and it got a lot of appreciative nods.
This is a US spec bike imported into the UK in 1996. V5 is present and has current MOT till September 2019. Showing 46000 miles on the clocks, backed up by MOT history for as far back as it goes.
I've owned the bike 18 months and in that time have put 3000 miles on it and I've loved every one of them. Handles and performs much better than I expected bearing in mind this was a change for me from a previous string of modern sports bikes. Brakes are good for an old bike too!
Well maintained, and fully serviced and with a stack of receipts and loads of history, including a dyno run from previous owner. New genuine head gasket fitted last year due to oil leak, new valve stem oil seals and valves correctly shimmed.
I've changed the handle bars to lower straighter bars, giving it a more 'muscle bike' appearance. But the original US spec chrome cow horn bars are included in the sell. I've also fitted a more modern push to cancel indicator switchgear - originally this bike had a "state of the art" self cancelling system which has long since stopped working.
Although approaching 40 years old and very much a classic bike, I still use it regularly for daily duties commuting to work.
Frame is in good original order. It's not the original paint, it's black with a dark green metallic fleck which is great in the sun light. To be mint it would benefit from restoration, but then it would be up for at least twice the price.
The GS1000 came in 3 models, the standard "E", the sporty "S" and the "G" which this is. The G is the touring model so benefits from shaft drive - which being my first experience of shaft drive is totally excellent! It also has a larger 22 Litre tank. Returns about 40MPG on average so great for clocking up the miles without too many petrol stops.
Classic insurance costs me just £80 a year, and from 2020 it will be tax and MOT exempt under new rules brought in this year.
Why go for these retro style bikes currently flooding the market when you can get the original cool!
