Absolutely stunning Bedford ca campervan, built 1969 registered 1970 making it one of the last Bedford ca, s made, built in Luton then shipped to Martin Walker doormobile works in Folkestone for its Conversion to a lift roof camper.
It’s previous long term owner of 11 years used it as daily transport for himself and his disabled wife during his ownership it was treated to a rolling restoration with the emphasis been on making it sound and reliable rather than a showpiece, that said it’s still a very pretty “daily driver”

During its life it’s traveled the length of the country attending Royal Ascot, Buckingham Palace
Somerset,, Jersey and the Lake District to name just a few.

A hugh amount of work has been carried out over the last 12 years and the easiest way is to just list it in no particular order -

Full engine overhaul including unleaded cylinder head with new springs valves and guides
New coil, new hot leads, distributer cap and rotar arm, electronic ignition, plugs,
New Webber carb (better performance than the original Zenith which are no longer available anyway)
Chrome front bumper with overriders (possibly unique)
Chrome rear bumper (never seen another)
Roll bar bushes, track rod ends, drag links, steering boxes, radiator re core, new hoses and clips,
rad cap, heater,(amazingly hot)
New Dynamator (alternator in dynamo housing)
Full stainless steel exhaust, new clutch, gearbox rebuilt
4x tubeless radial tyres
New brake shoes
New master and slave cylinders
brake pipes flushed and renewed brake fluid
New wheel bearings
New water pump
Front springs and dampers
Prop shaft ups

The van has had a full glass out respray in 2 pack a couple of years back with new rubber seals all round. Any new metal required was welded in prior to the re paint, the paint work still looks good to this day with the old mark here and there adding to it’s patina. All the original steel wheels were powder coated as everything has been done to a view with it not being kept in a heated garage.

The conservation rageme has been carried out to provide a reliable van that starts everytime and will go anywhere with confidence. The chassis is absolutely solid. There is a fitted eberspacher type 1. 8kw auxiliary heater which is powdered by petrol from the tank and blows hot air into the van via a directional hose, lovely and warm in the winter, can be used to pre heat the van on cold mornings or to provide central heating either in motion or static.

The roof canopy has been replaced and the original dining table is present and in useable condition. The rear interior of the van has just been treated to all new ply lining and carpets as, has, the cab area. I have the original base unit holding the cooker and sink which although not in mint condition could be pressed back in to service if the new owner wants to re fit it.

Please look at the photographs carefully, the work carrried out has been to preserve the van, not to turn it into a brand new one. She has character and patina and has such she looks, sounds, smells and acts every minute of her 50 years of use. The driving experience is very different from a modern vehicle. The gearbox is three speed column change with slow synchro on second despite an extensive gearbox rebuild. The gearlinkeage from the column to the gearbox is miles of rods and linkeages so a slow and gentle hand results in a delightful drive. The brakes are non servo drums and there is no pas so you always need to be thinking ahead !! She will cruise along at 50 mph all day long happily, she will go faster (70mph) but she does not like it and anyone with mechanical symphathy will keep her at 50mph.
There are no over heating issues and the oil pressure is fine even when hot. The seats convert to beds and are surprisingly comfortable in either mode. Where ever you go you are guaranteed not to be anonymous, people just love taking photographs with this ‘cute’ little van. Due to her age she is now tax and mot exempt. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a lovely old camper as there are not many of them left on our roads today !! When did you last see one ?
